    Unstable Mac SE

Ok, quick update: got four 9-chip 1MB SIMMs in the post today, installed them, and the SE’s running absolutely perfectly! Time to button this one up and call it done!

    Fixing cracked ABS plastic

I’ve used MEK solvent instead of acetone with great success. It is, however, horrible stuff. Open those windows, set up a fan to blow fumes away from you and do not, in any circumstances, take a sniff ‘just to see’. But the results are magical, especially on clean breaks.

    Attic dropped soffit air sealing

Looks like an arduous bit of work, but that thermal image really shows how much it’s needed! I really enjoy seeing posts (usually in Facebook groups) about US building construction. Almost everything here in the UK is brick and/or stone with external cavity walls, often pumped full of...

Subforum Display output from 8-bit computer (video, Y/C, RGB...)

I do like the sound of this! There's sites like retrorgb.com which are heavily console-focused, but there's no info all in one place for home computers that I know of. Plus, between us, I bet we've connected up or modded all the systems listed on the forum for RGB! Besides the nitty-gritty of...

    Unstable Mac SE

Great finds -- didn't occur to me that I might be able to, y'know, just check Apple's website! :D Still rather curious about why this is the case... Not that it matters -- just interested to know what the SE does differently to, say, an Atari STE.

    Unstable Mac SE

Hmmm -- just realised I've ordered more SIMMs from the same place that sent me the 3-chip modules, which were actually listed as 9-chip modules. So I'll probably get yet another 3-chip set on Friday. Boo! It suddenly hit me that, of course, "1MBx9" means "9-bit" not "9-chip", so 3-chip RAM...

    Unstable Mac SE

Good plan! I re-fitted the stock 4x256 SIMMs, buttoned the whole thing up and have left it running MacTest Pro’s tests on loop. Absolutely rock-solid. (I suddenly realised I could run MTP from floppy after booting into System 6. So therefore could run the tests that I wouldn’t have been...

    Unstable Mac SE

Thanks! I shall give warming it up a try. I’ve been doing some RAM experiments this afternoon. 100% stable with the stock 4x256. Tried 2x1MB and 4x1MB with both sets of modules I have - the odd behaviour returns. These are 3-chip parity modules rather than the 8-chip non-parity 256K sticks...

    Unstable Mac SE

Thanks both! I received my ATX extension cable today, so I’ve been able to fiddle with the logic board outside of the case (great idea in @JDW ‘s recent video!) I misremembered in my first post. I swapped back in the original 4x256K SIMMS and the machine is much more stable. Can’t say for...

    Macintosh connector part numbers

This is likely a simple one, but as always, it's only simple once you know... What connector is used on the SE's hard drive activity LED? It's a simple two-pin deal, but there appears to be a locking mechanism that I can't quite match in my searches. I'm looking for the male side so I can...

    THE ATARI INCIDENT (520 ST)

Glad it was a straightforward repair! Those no F, no M STs were never all that common (at least here in the UK) and are getting harder to find with each year. Nice little TOS 1.4 upgrade there too -- a great quality-of-life upgrade for those early machines. If I had one, I'd love a switchable...

    Unstable Mac SE

Ok - the chessboard VRAM test does seem to reliably trigger the problem. It displays for a few seconds, then there’s a ‘wobble’ of noise vertically in the picture at which point the speaker emits a low-pitched rumble. About 1/2sec later the screen goes entirely corrupt and a single loud...

    Unstable Mac SE

My SE SuperDrive’s inching closer to being restored, but hopefully someone can help me track down an elusive issue… The machine will boot fine and appear to work well. I can copy files around, launch apps, play a bit of SimCity etc. But, it will go through patches of being very crashy and...

    Mac SE + BlueSCSI - Won't Bus-Power

All sorted! Replaced CR1 with a new 1N4001 and the BlueSCSI’s running perfectly on bus power. Thanks very much indeed for your help, both!

    Mac SE + BlueSCSI - Won't Bus-Power

Heh. Never had this before - sprayed a little IPA around the diode and gave it the slightest knock with a soft toothbrush and CR1 literally disintegrated! So I’ll definitely need to replace that 😆 (edit: looks like it’s a 1N4001 and I can’t find my diode kit. But I’ve just scraped through...

    Mac SE + BlueSCSI - Won't Bus-Power

Looks like we’re headed in the right direction, @Branchus ! Red lead to the striped side gives 0.75V. In the direction where it should be an open reading, I see 0.52V Gonna clean up the area and re-solder, just on the off-chance it helps, but I imagine I’ll be needing to replace that diode...

    Mac SE + BlueSCSI - Won't Bus-Power

Ok, whilst my mounting bracket for the BlueSCSI was printing, I measured the voltage between ground and the closed TERM jumper. 0.77V! With the board powered from the Mac PSU via the molex and berg connector, the same point shows 5.1V. Thanks for the tip, @Branchus - I’ll check that diode...

    Mac SE + BlueSCSI - Won't Bus-Power

Well, thought I might as well give the Molex-to-berg adapter a try on my lunch break. Amazon sent me the wrong item (just a regular Molex splitter), but I found a Berg adapter in my box of stuff. And it works perfectly. Lovely to see the machine boot so quickly! Might this suggest...

    Mac SE + BlueSCSI - Won't Bus-Power

Thanks, eric -- I’ve taken the photos (attached) and will get the meter out to test the voltages this evening after work. Just to check - should I test across the two termination jumpers (with them closed)? The only deviation I made from the instructions was to mount the diodes on the front of...

    This section needs a post!

Fantastic video! I’ve read loads about it, but never actually seen the Lisa OS in use. It’s not the same, but I imagine there’s a way to emulate a Lisa? I really enjoy playing with old OSes to see what ideas live on and which died with the machine. (to its credit, there are very few concepts...
