My first Mystic is being mystical about working.

Mac OS 9 requires a powerpc processor. Mac OS 8.1 is the last to run on a 68k-based hardware. The 575 never ran 9 unless you had a PowerPC upgrade card.

My first Mystic is being mystical about working.

You're not version-capped at 7.1/7.5, with a little light ResEdit work you can run up to 8.1, which is what I run in my mystic color classic, purely for ease of access to HFS+ formatted drives. See 2.1.3 here: https://colourclassicfaq.com/mobo/mystic.shtml

Recommend me some older Mac-centric books

Don't forget David Pogue's 'Hard Drive' novel, featuring lots of Macs. Not technical (being a novel and all) but still relevant subject matter.

The MessagePad 2100 joins the quarter century club

Where DOES the time go? I still use mine many times a week, but I don't think I can quite say daily. I got my first 2100 in 2000, well after being discontinued. It made my OS 1.2 120 seem basic in comparison. I still haven't found anything that I like as well as the Newton outline/checklist...

Grail Item Acquired - Twentieth Anniversary Mac

Sure, just about any System 7 or later Mac can if there is a sound in port. It's just most of them don't have any special speakers or anything, so it's probably not a common use case. Just set the sound input in the Sound control panel to 'Sound in' and crank up your music. I've done it on a...

Grail Item Acquired - Twentieth Anniversary Mac

The turntable goes to a phono preamp, and both it and the Cambridge (basically a fancy iPod, digital audio/spotify player) go to an RCA switchbox, which then goes to the TAM's mic in. So the TAM's sound is set to 'Sound In' and acts as the the amplifier.

Grail Item Acquired - Twentieth Anniversary Mac

That's a clever idea. I wonder if an SSD + base TAM system 7 install would do the trick?

Grail Item Acquired - Twentieth Anniversary Mac

I've been working on a new office, converting a shed. Finally all moved in. Things are bit snug (95 sq feet!) so my full-size stereo and speakers didn't make the move, but the 20th anniversary mac is a great replacement, as it is both stereo AND visualizer in one compact package. (see, i can...

Grail Item Acquired - Twentieth Anniversary Mac

Things I've learned about the TAM so far: 1) The subwoofer and the main unit both have fans. Makes sense, but in a silent room they are definitely noticeable 2) Sound throughput works even when the system goes to sleep. You can't adjust volume without waking it up. This significantly increases...

Grail Item Acquired - Twentieth Anniversary Mac

Well, I never really thought i'd be able to get one of these. I know there are folks who scoff and say "it's an overpriced PowerBook 3400". But it just looks so cool. And it sounds absolutely terrific. I've wanted one for years, and yesterday I met up with everyone's favorite founding member...

Apple Store Grand Opening: Mall of America

Thanks for posting these. I started working at the MOA store in September of that year. Fun to see old co-workers and the store at the time.
