Thoughts On The Global Tech Outage?

We had supermarkets closing down here (because their cash registers wouldn't work anymore) and our family doctor was unable to retrieve appointments / medical charts. Only professional working in town was probably our dentist, because the old lady assistant still keeps track of appointments with...

Support for PPP in The Old Net WiFi modem

Does somebody know if this is still being worked on by Rich? I've been trying to get PPP configured for many evenings now. If I reproduce exactly what Rich does in the YouTube video in the first post, I still get a "MacPPP: resource error" message. Connecting with ZTerm works fine though, so I...

Old Net WiFi modem and ZTerm - not responding

@Genjoke Why would you connect it to a modern Mac. Because you want to use the 2 MB flash space? I always only ever plugged it into my IIci. Do you have an older version of it? I think I read that only the latest edition (which I have) supports the on-the-fly firmware updates, if that is why...

Old Net WiFi modem and ZTerm - not responding

@Genjoke Yes, it works AGAIN! But - I have not the slightest idea of what made it work again. I tried flashing it, I tried reset and I've unpowered and powered it back on. At one point it came back with 300 baud default, which I have since cranked up to 38400 baud again. It has been working...

Old Net WiFi modem and ZTerm - not responding

Hi everybody, using a Mac IIci with a new Old Net WiFi modem, latest firmware (well, it claims to have shipped with it) and ZTerm 1.0.1 on System 6.0.8. I managed to once set it up according to the docs it came with and connect to the eotd BBS it mentions. I've then changed both modem and ZTerm...

Pismo - PRAM battery sources or rebuild info?

Hey all, my Pismo's PRAM battery (part no. 616-0108) is a goner. Just opened up the Pismo and yanked it out. The only sources for replacement I've found online are sold out - does anyone know of a reliable one with some batteries left in stock? If not, how difficult is it to build this beast...

Netscape for 7.1 Mac SE and BlueSCSI v2

@billbucks If I can give you an advice - go with Gopher on your SE. Not only does it offer its own eco-system of blogs and download pages but there's even a www gateway that allows accessing www content through gopher. Last time I checked it was still at an early stage, but it sounded very...

TinkerDifferent Game Server - Now testing!

Thank you Kai! It works again and we played a few rounds yesterday but got badly beaten up by the bots every single time. Any chance for a server for people with reflexes 40+? It'd also be cool to play some of the team-based UT99 multiplayer options for a change? Humans vs Bots promises...

TinkerDifferent Game Server - Now testing!

Our group of three was just trying to join the UT99 server but can't. It looks like it's initially connecting and starts parsing some index.unr file but stalls on that for us. I did not change my setup since the last game on the server ... can somebody else confirm?

Tiger OSX - OS9 not recognized as startup volume

Yes, I did. Would OS9 work if I hadn't? I don't think so? And it does work fine. Everything works. Except OSX detecting it as bootable. Funny thing: It DOES show up as a valid OS9 installation to boot from in Tiger's Classic Mode?

Tiger OSX - OS9 not recognized as startup volume

Hi folks, I have a Mac Mini G4 that dual-boots OSX Tiger ("Shuriken") and Mac OS 9.2.2, each on their own partition. The OSX Startup Volume control panel doesn't recognize the OS9 installation as bootable, giving me only the OSX partition as an option. It *does* recognize the OS9 partition in...

TinkerDifferent Game Server - Now testing!

I had been on the UT '99 server a few days ago. Ping was much better than expected, server location is the UK? Man, my reflexes didn't get better after passing the 40 winters. The bots wasted me, not knowing the map didn't help either. Still, it was a fun experience. I need to try that again...

Mac Mod Paradise is about to die - who can save it?

I started out the Mac Mod Paradise (http://mac.mod-paradise.com) together with a friend about 10 months ago. The idea was that Macintosh hardware modding gets good coverage (TD being the king, of course :) ) but we felt there was very little about software modding. In particular, game modding...

    SE/30 Jittery video

Hasn't this kind of problem with compact Macs been lamented ever since? I vaguely recall reading about it the first time back in the early 90's in some MacUser (or else) issue. My SE suffers from the same problem. Video jitters for a few seconds and goes back to normal for another few minutes...

New website homepage - feedback would be appreciated!

I like it, it has personality and is unique. Keep it up, 3lectr1c! My only gripe is: can you make this accessible via http too? As in offering both? No reason to "hide" things from the public :-) That way, your site would be accessible from older browsers too. And if you're really adventurous...

Copying legacy software from internet repositories to 68k Macs

Err...i find the Garden renders ok on my IIci, with a browser like Netscape 2 or Wannabe it's even usable on a lowly 68030. Though I prefer iCab 2.9 and a few seconds wait :) If you know what you're looking for, the text-only approach is fine. There is even a WannaBe search plugin for the...

Difficulty Upgrading iMac G4 from Panther to Tiger

The CD version of Tiger on the Mac Garden is good. IIRC it consisted of 4 CD images, of which you only really need 2 or 3 to get a basic Tiger installation up. (the rest is printer drivers and additional languages I think) I did use the CD installer many times before and it worked fine for me...

    Hello Everyone!

Great taste in OS, indeed :-) (well, being on the System 7 Today team, I may be a bit biased :-D) Welcome to TD! Have fun :)

    ThinkC Think C 6 and System 7.6.1...

I tried ThinknC 6.0.1 on my Power Mac 8600 and 7.6.1 some time ago and ran into the same problems as @BFEXTU. It would hard crash especially during compiling, corrupting my project file in the process. Runs very nice and stable on my IIci - seems to be 68k only material.

    The Influence of Steve Jobs

I've read the official biography, I've watched nearly all keynotes and even the old internal Apple videos of Steve. I even read what those who worked together with him (Hertzfeld & co.) had to say.I still feel like I have no idea about this man. But one thing is apparent for an outsider. Ever...
