    2024 PowerPC Challenge

Thank you so much for posting this challenge, TinkerDifferent! I had a blast and learned a lot. I liberated four PPC machines from the Free Geek in the process while expanding my knowledge and skills on PPC machines.

    Managing your collections

I have a excel file with 30+ rows of Hackintosh's and another with 30+ rows of real Apple devices, but the collection keeps growing. I was thinking of trying MAMP and OpenWiki, but it seems way too complicated for what I need. I would like all the details like EveryMac.com, so I can compare...

    2024 PowerPC Challenge

Day 28: Continued modem testing I got the two iMac lamps to connect, one worked at 56K and the other only at 38K (OSX), but both successful. OSX Zterm to OS9 Zterm. OSX 10.4.11 to OSX 10.4.11

    2024 PowerPC Challenge

Day 27: Local Dial-Up Test I did a few inquiries on some forums looking for a way to test modems locally without a phone line. Yes, there is some basic circuitry you can build to create a simulated phone line, but you won't have dial tone. I did not want to setup a PBX. There are some other...

SATA? In an old world PCI Power Mac?! IMPOSSIBRU! (Updated 11/22/23)

Success with a one dollar card from the local Free Geek store. Put it into my Sawtooth and it was not recognized under 10.4.11, so booted into OS9 and it showed up as unknown. Correct VendorID, so did the flash. And rebooted in OS9 just to verify post-flash. Booted fine with SSD...

    2024 PowerPC Challenge

Day 26 FreeGeek bonanza! Well, the $20 dual G5-1.8GHz was gone, so didn't bring that home. But I found a keyboard ($15), another StarTech single IDE->Sata adapter ($5), a PCI 4 port USB card with one port missing ($1), and what was hoping was a compatible IMPOSSIBRU PCI sata card ($1). The...

G5 Quad Liquid Cooling - Question

To me, that looks like epoxy, not crystalized coolant. Way too smooth to be crystalized coolant. This is what mine looked like... The only guides I have seen are for one of the other variants on a non-quad. I have both versions of the non-quad assemblies (dual pump - fat radiator, and...

Day 23 Impossible Cat : Clouded Leopard The pre-release developer build of Snow Leopard works on some PPC machines. With some glitches. It took 3 different downloads before I could get it to boot on my unconfirmed Mac Mini G4. I will have to test on the other 4 working PPC models I have...

    2024 PowerPC Challenge

Day 22 PPC Towers of Death The 1.8GHz G5 arrived today. It appears to be a V3. I now have a 1.8GHz v1, v2, and v3. Big sad face, no combination created a chime. None of them work together. So that leaves me with 3 empty G5 cases for Hackintosh projects, 2 liquid radiator assemblies to...

    2024 PowerPC Challenge

Day 21: C64 emulation on PPC My mom picked me up an old C64, 1541 floppy, and monitor a few years ago from a garage sale, but I have never powered it on (fear of the over-volt failing voltage regulator). It has been sitting on the shelf and I think about it every now and then. Growing up, my...

Day 20: Reminisce the old days A few years back someone was cleaning out their storage and happened upon an Apple IIe and IIc, and gave them to me. I had to buy the power supply for the IIc from eBay, and disassembled them both before powering them on. I had some old floppy disks from the...

    2024 PowerPC Challenge

Day 19 PPC progress I decided to try another 1.8Ghz processor off eBay for $16, so waiting for that to arrive. Stopped by FreeGeek, their dual 1.8Ghz G5 dropped price to $20, so if it is still there next week, I will probably bring it home. No other great purchases, but did get these from...

    2024 PowerPC Challenge

Day 18 Today I will try to do some 3D modeling refinement on my next 3D printed miniature: G3 "Blue and White" and I will be using my G4 Mac Mini. Loaded up Lightwave 9.3 and opened my model. The filament is closer to Bondi Blue than the "blue and white" And here is a look from the...

Day 17 post 2: Hot, Pink on Pink Action!!! I decided to pull out the Strawberry iMac tray load and benchmark it against my 3D printed mini iMac. I am still working on the mini mouse and mini keyboard (original puck mouse for scale). The mini is powered by a 4x4 inch Intel NUC running...

    2024 PowerPC Challenge

Day 17 G5 maybe later... Swapped CPU locations, ensured they were seated all the way... still iffy on the booting, power up and it chimes, but no video... let it speed up the fans for 10 minutes and restart and I get some life... Finally got ASD to boot OF... But it lies and tells me its...

    2024 PowerPC Challenge

Day 16 G5 Dual 2.5 rebuild I tried to do some more benchmarks, but it keeps going into thermal sleep, after 10-15 seconds. I aborted the Cinebench test, and downloaded ASD 2.5.8 and burned the CD. I could not get it to boot into Open FIrmware, but the OS version booted. Of course the CPU...

Picked up a PowerMac G4 MDD with the Zip750 drive!

All of mine showed up as normal drives on the IDE chain. G3 Strawberry, G4 cube, 2 different model G4 lamps, and G4 Sawtooth. Do you have other devices on the IDE cable (master slave issue)? If you purchased the 2.5 mSATA to IDE drives, here are the jumper settings:

Day 15 G5 Dual revisit So i have the dead water cooled 2.5GHz G5 dual, and an air cooled 1.8GHz G5 dual. I got a replacement power supply from eBay for the liquid cooled Dual G5 2.5GHz, but it still showed no signs of life, then discovered the coolant leak. Hence the FreeGeek salvage 1.8...
