I'll be there too. Looking forward to meeting up. I'll bring some stickers :)

Color Classic logic board powers on from keyboard then nothing...

How well did you clean up the EGRET? In my experience cap goo around that IC will prevent boot. In some cases scrubbing with a brush and IPA will work, but in others I've had to remove the chip, clean underneath and then solder it back on. Good luck!

Help with gone wrong recapping attempt.

The page is expired, but here's a screen shot from my purchase history. It's not an every day kind of deal, but I've had great luck just by keeping saved searches across eBay, Craigslist and FB marketplace Agree this is all overkill for most hobbyists. I waited until I was frequently doing...

Help with gone wrong recapping attempt.

Preheaters are another thing I've found great used deals on. I got a Metcal PCT-1000 which links up with my HCT-1000 hot air station from eBay for $200. it retails for $2,000! It's been nice to have, and it's cool that it links with the hot air station to not overheat the board. They have both...

Help with gone wrong recapping attempt.

@3lectr1c Agree they can be expensive and it's not worth getting the cheap ($30ish) ones since they're such poor quality. I recommend finding a set that's high quality, but used, and ideally already compatible with your existing soldering station. I haven't used the Hakko tweezers, but I bet...

Help with gone wrong recapping attempt.

@Genjoke if your budget allows, a good pair of hot tweezers is IMO the best way to remove caps. No hot air to melt nearby nylon, easy to get into the toughest corners and no twisting. Here's a vid of me removing all the caps from a Classic II MLB in just a few minutes with them the first day I...

    Agilent/Keysight InfiniVision MSO-X 3000 series oscilloscope repair

I recently recovered a dead MSO-X 3014A with a 1GHz upgrade from e-waste. On power up just the Ref, Math, Digital and Serial lights would turn on, but nothing else would happen. I posted over at the EEVBlog forums and those folks suspected the problem was due to corrupt NAND and could be...

    Snooper serial loopback plug

I'm in the process of troubleshooting a LaserWriter 12/640. The service manual refers to a EPOST (Extended Power-On Self Test) mode. This mode is initiated with a "printer rollback test plug" (P/N 922-1489). I went ahead and tried the loopback plug I built for Snooper and can confirm it works...

About that white goop in power supplies

Acid is corrosive. it could cause damage to the board over a (probably long) period of time.

About that white goop in power supplies

It’s made by Chipquick and says noncorrosive and non conductive. It should be fine, but that’s a tiny tube that won’t go very far.

About that white goop in power supplies

The glue is silastic and the purpose is what @This Does Not Compute noted above. If you replace it, use something labeled 'electronics grade' or just be sure what you buy doesn't have acetic acid in it.

    AppleVision 850AV Repair

While I wait on the replacement sync processor, I decided to take a look a the neck board B+ pins on the scope. Pin 3 (B+ control OTA output; comparator input): Goes to about 1V when high voltage kicks in then quickly settles back to 0V Pin 4 (B+ control comparator input/output): Has a steady...

    AppleVision 850AV Repair

Yes, I did connect the ADB cable and installed the latest drivers, but it didn't have an impact on this symptom. Thanks for the input though!

    AppleVision 850AV Repair

At @techknight 's suggestion, I opened up the neck board to see if there was some controller logic there. There's a lot going on here, but he suggested checking B+ on the sync processor TDA4858. I soldered some 24AWG wires to pins 3-6 and put the neck assembly back together. I connected a...

    AppleVision 850AV Repair

I put the monitor back together enough to test and the symptom didn't change. So CL43 being a bit out of spec wasn't the issue. I have more caps on order and will be testing and/or replacing some of the transistors in the horizontal circuit next.

    AppleVision 850AV Repair

Thanks for the info and link. I'll figure it out eventually. At the moment I'm thinking it's an out of spec capacitor or maybe a marginal transistor in the horizontal circuit. And yeah feel free to reuse the cap list. It's rare enough that I feel motivated to spend some time on it even if it's a...

    AppleVision 850AV Repair

The secondary power caps all tested fine. I replaced those I had in sock while I wait for the others. I did find that CL43 (a bypass cap on the QL20 emitter pin) in the horizontal circuit was 22% out of spec. Not sure if that's enough to cause this problem but replaced that and CL6. I...

    AppleVision 850AV Repair

I was lucky enough to find an AppleVision 850AV 20" display in nice condition. It does power up, but only kind of works at 1024x768 @ 60Hz. Most other resolutions or sync rates that it's supposed to support result in a distorted narrow raster. Hopefully it's just some electrolytic capacitors on...

    Metcal SP-440 Self-Contained Desolder System

Nope. I'm still on my first chamber liner and filter actually. I'd still recommend a Melitta-style coffee filter to use for the chamber liners and filters from another soldering equipment manufacturer that are the same size or larger and just cut/stamp them to the size needed for the Metcal...

Apple Thermal Transfer Printer aka Iic Scribe repair and cartridge info

Thanks so much @XodiumRetro !! That dump is identical to the one I posted previously, so that rules that out as the culprit. I guess the next step will be going back to check my work on the board. Ugh!
