    New to Me: Quicksilver G4

I did go with a PATA to SATA adapter because OWC had decent prices on their kits when I ordered that use the StarTech adapter. Performance is good, but copying files from the NAS is bottlenecked by the ATA bus. Not sure if I care enough to get better file copy performance at the prices being...

    New to Me: Quicksilver G4

Since this is primarily going to be an OS 9 machine and will not be running much software which benefits from multi-processors, I’m not really sure there’s much in the way of upgrades that are worth it. So I’m just looking for a Radeon 9000 Pro at the moment as the 4Ti is pretty pricy. A dual...

Getting random crashes when screen savers are running. Can someone help me figure out a log from MacsBug?

It's been a loooong time since I've done any 68K assembler, so take some of this with a grain of salt. This function seems to be a private Toolbox function to convert pixel patterns? It gets passed in a pointer/handle(?) to a data structure of some kind. It pulls some data out of that...

    New to Me: Quicksilver G4

The Mac that got me through college was a PowerMac 8600, but I did pine for a couple of the late model PowerMacs, with the design of the Quicksilver G4 being my favorite. But I wound up with an iMac G5 and later a Mac Pro. So when I saw a working Quicksilver G4 867Mhz in good shape locally, and...

    Refreshing a Quadra 605 + Bonus Quadra 650

While I wait on the VRAM, I’ve been working on the upscaling side of my setup. Right now I’m using an Amazon bought VGA adapter, feeding into a Retrotink 4K, outputting to a 4K OLED. Yes, the 4K is expensive, but it supports upscaling VGA and DVI/HDMI, and it’s been a great tool to have with my...

    Refreshing a Quadra 605 + Bonus Quadra 650

Everything but the VRAM has shown up. So I followed up with a few more modifications to the system: - Installed a full MC68040 and 50x50x15mm heat sink. - Installed a Noctua A6x15 FLX fan to get a little more airflow in the case (rated at 14CFM vs 11CFM of the original). - Installed an Apple...

    Apple Keyboard ADB port broken.

Yes, S-Video is also Mini DIN 4. I'm thinking more the PCB footprint, not the plug itself. Different sockets are meant to attach to the PCB in slightly different ways which may not be compatible with the PCB in the OP's keyboard. For example, the one ADB Keyboard II teardown I ran across seemed...

    Apple Keyboard ADB port broken.

These are Mini DIN 4 sockets and are still readily available from places like DigiKey and Mouser. I’m not super familiar with the pin spacing Apple used on the keyboards themselves to mount them onto the PCBs, so you’ll want to make sure the part you use is roughly the same footprint and pin layout.

    Refreshing a Quadra 605 + Bonus Quadra 650

Picked up some 26AWG wire and installed the bodges. Not my best work, but all the replaced capacitors beeped out correctly based on the schematic, so time to start putting things back together. Put back together in the lower case. The battery is temporary as I’m still waiting on many parts...

Type of Sockets Apple Used for Keyboard, Game Pad, and Language Card

I’m not sure those exact sockets are available anymore. There are DIP sockets available that don’t use the ‘easy insert’ lip, if I’m understanding correctly, but I’m not sure the pitch matches. I’m thinking something along these lines are what are most likely to be compatible, but it’s been...

    Refreshing a Quadra 605 + Bonus Quadra 650

I lucked out and found a Quadra 605 in surprisingly good shape at a local PC recycler. The case has only minimal yellowing, and the plastics are in better shape than I was hoping for. Only visible damage is a bit of an indent in the top case from where someone probably scraped a monitor across...

    LCIII (3) BlueSCSI strange behaviour

It looks like macOS has changed how the quarantine attribute works for sandboxed apps a while back, attaching them to all files accessed by those apps. Just in case the app is trying to write to a file that happens to be an executable script or the like I guess. Meaning you need to intentionally...

    LCIII (3) BlueSCSI strange behaviour

Seems more likely to be coincidence. With the stories of removing/resoldering the sound chip fixing sound after working on the board (recapping, or in your case, replacing the HDD), it makes me wonder somewhat naively if we are seeing weak solder joints on this chip. Flex or heat could be the...
