I Bought a Better System Board for my Octane and Need Troubleshooting Help

After more research, I was incorrect in my error assessment. The error is more of a generic interrupt error. I haven't copied the full stack trace I get, but if it fails the POST test immediately, it shows as "Interrupt Controller Diagnostic" fail. I'm going to try and confirm if it's a heat...

I Bought a Better System Board for my Octane and Need Troubleshooting Help

I agree that SGI machines seem to be much more fiddly in both hardware and software from their contemporary Sun counterparts, but this might be partly due to the fact that I spend a lot of time with Suns back in the day. Even so, in the last month I've brought back to life two Octanes, a R4K...

I Bought a Better System Board for my Octane and Need Troubleshooting Help

I'd swap CPU module from the one board to the other at this point... Yes - the lightbar uses incandescent bulbs, and they often are burnt out at this point. There are pointers on-line on how to replace the bulb or "upgrade" to an LED.

I Bought a Better System Board for my Octane and Need Troubleshooting Help

Do you get any kind of light at the lightbar when you turn it on? Usually starts out white, then turns red until initial diags pass. This assumes the bulbs in your light bar are not burned out, which can be very likely...

Scratches/scuffs in dark plastic - how to best recover

The last couple of weeks have been "SGI Recovery" time. I've been working on a Octane, Indigos, and and Indy. My question comes up since all of these have a dark plastic for their cases - blue in the case of the Indigos and green for the Octane. On these dark plastics, scratches and scuffs are...

I Bought a Better System Board for my Octane and Need Troubleshooting Help

Wow - you did your Octane way cheaper than me! :) From a quick look, it don't see why that board wouldn't work, unless it needs a different backplane version. Are you able to swap over just the CPU module from the new board to the working board? If you have pics of both boards it might help.

    Want - Octane front door

I will place this in the marketplace as well, but I could use a good front door with the old Octane script for my machine. The one I have took a big scratch right across the "Octane" lettering and the silkscreen is gouged. Don't necessarily need the whole front, but would consider it if the...

    Octane video error

To wrap back around on this thread... Seems the RAM on the card was failed, and no real way (that I could find) to isolate and/or replace. I ended up buying another video card which is working great.

Distorted audio with new MacEffects Thunder PDS accelerator in an LC II

Accelerators and sound don't always play well together. In the old times there was usually a control panel or init that would modify the sound code to get the timing correct. Don't know if such a thing is necessary for this particular accelerator.
