Repairing my Apple Tape Backup 40SC Drive and Rescuing Apple History from 36 year old data tapes!

Kept me on the edge of my seat :) Who knew there were so many ways to inadvertently lose data, or even permanently destroy media, with tapes…

    Canon Cat with additional sublegends

Hah, yes, Forth! :) Are you ready for something weird? Here's another Cat with the same aftermarket labels: This one also has a "F" legend, which probably fell off of mine. (I considered the possibility that this might have been my Cat before I bought it, but the video dates from...

    Canon Cat with additional sublegends

I'm taking the opportunity to do some (gentle) retrobrighting of my Canon Cat, using the vapor method. This includes the double-shot keycaps, which exhibit a bit of yellowing on the white legends. This particular Cat has, since before I acquired it, sported additional stickers on four of the...

    MacTable (V2) Restoration

Great to see this thread! (Was this the one for sale up near Chico recently?) If you are interested in acquiring/documenting matching items, there’s a filing cabinet for sale in Berkeley. Never seen one of these in the wild before...

    Dr. Bott MoniSwitch ADC

I have to think the real use case they're referring to was rapidly switching to another, identical computer -- being driven by an employee closely mirroring Jobs' actions -- in the case of an unexpected demo crash :)

PB170 / BlueSCSI SD Extension Cable?

I've had the same idea (and even ordered an extension to try it out). It seems like a lot of the extenders terminate in a quite large, plastic-enclosed end that has to be broken down to be made usable on the rear modem port. I've had it on my list to disassemble my 140 to examine the dimensions...

A bad or dirty potentiometer perhaps?

[Help Wanted] - Add missing screenshots to the Garden!

This is a great idea! (One pet peeve of mine is screenshots on wildly different operating systems -- a 1987 program screen-captured under MacOS 9.2, for example, with all of the grey chrome. But I suppose something is better than nothing.)

Archiving CD images using Toast 3 (1997)

Great, this seems to verify that Toast 3.5.7 in "SCSI Copy" mode produces identical results to dumptoiso (which uses dd behind the scenes): The target disc image file is... 1989-08 BMUG PDROM Vol1 1.2.iso Num. Name Type Start Size 1...

Archiving CD images using Toast 3 (1997)

Thanks for the post! So Toast 3.5.7 refuses to do a SCSI copy of a “multi-track data disc”, not surprisingly. (This would be red book audio plus data). A single-track (data) CD seems to be valid according to DiskJockey: What linux command are you running above to get the readout of the...

Blue SCSI v2 SDCard CRC Errors and Other Issues...

Just a note that I was also getting these CRC errors on a 660av (not surprising given the 840av report). Have flashed the new firmware and will give the logfile a look in a few days!

Archiving CD images using Toast 3 (1997)

Ah, turns out this blog post has a good writeup on use of Toast to create (nearly) forensic images. Looks like the "Disk Copy" option was introduced in 4.x, which is just one version newer than the 3.5.x branch I was one. Luckily 4 still runs on 68k so I'll give that a shot...

Archiving CD images using Toast 3 (1997)

Thanks, this is all very helpful — for my actual ‘forensic’ work, I’m using the script somebody posted on Macintosh Garden, which I think does a really excellent job (and results in a helpful log file as well). There is of course endless discussion/drama on MG about the “right” way to image...

Archiving CD images using Toast 3 (1997)

Versions of Toast earlier than 3.x don't seem to include support for saving images from a physical CD-ROM. Toast 3.5 does, however -- in a variety of formats: Of these options, at least Mac Volume and SCSI Copy result in a file readable by DiskJockey -- albeit in different ways. It's not as...

Making bootable disks for the Canon Cat

I will try that — and another idea I just had, what if I fill a disk with text on my Cat, image it using the Greaseweazle, and send the image to you? If you write it and successfully read it, that would suggest that our two drive are in alignment (at least for general-purpose data I guess.)

Making bootable disks for the Canon Cat

OK, I'm now trying on a new (old stock) TEAC FD-235HF (C829-US), which I believe is similar to you have. I can successfully write 20 tracks to slideshow.edsk and 78 to slideshow_2.edsk. (Does that sound correct?) From cold boot we go right to the editor, however, and with USE FRONT + DISK we...

Making bootable disks for the Canon Cat

I would say we are very nearly there: The garbledness is different each boot -- not predictable. All the programs (Raskin, Catterm and Slideshow) show the same behavior of both a garbled load screen and then dumping you to the standard word processor (as opposed to the custom code). The...

Making bootable disks for the Canon Cat

OK I think we are ready to try this... (That's the right one reinforced; the one on the left had broken off completely and required a different bend in the metal). ^ The green disk light on the right, and "DISK" notification at the bottom of the screen, mean we're back in business...
