Reconnaissance: Modern Diagnostics for your Classic Mac

Update for those hoping for Linux support: here's a preview of Reconnaissance running on Linux Mint (x64) and Ubuntu (arm64).

    USB-Serial Adapter and Cable Options

You'll need both a USB to Serial (DB-9) adapter and a cable to go from DB-9 to Mini-DIN-8 serial. To connect the USB adapter to your computer you'll probably also need a USB A to C cable or adapter unless you have USB-A ports. See attached photo. Pictured: OIKWAN USB to RS232 Adapter with FTDI...

Reconnaissance: Modern Diagnostics for your Classic Mac

Sounds like we had the same idea! The Universal ROM sources are helpful but some of the details of how the test commands vary on different machines are kind of hard to decipher from that with all the conditionals and codenames for stuff. So to get a better understanding and figure out some...

    USB-Serial Adapter and Cable Options

I think this is the M0199 Mac Plus peripheral adapter I mentioned in my original post. I don't have one to try (yet). Are you able to try it, or to check it with a multimeter to see if the correct pins are connected? I put a pinout reference here. There are only 3 pins + the shell that need to...

Reconnaissance: Modern Diagnostics for your Classic Mac

Absolutely, I would love to see what you've figured out and hopefully incorporate it. I'll be sharing my source code soon too.

Reconnaissance: Modern Diagnostics for your Classic Mac

My plan is that the next update will lower the minimum requirement to macOS 12 (Monterey).

Reconnaissance: Modern Diagnostics for your Classic Mac

Thank you thank you! I intend to support all systems that the TechStep supports, and I would also like to support later machines that have a diagnostic monitor built into the ROM that's accessible by serial connection. I haven't made a full list of what falls into what category, but this is...

    MARCHintosh 2026 Projects

My primary #MARCHintosh project for this year is a brand new diagnostics app that runs on modern machines and makes it easy to access the diagnostics mode built in the ROM of many Classic Macs. If you're struggling to get a Sad Mac working, I hope this project can help! Official announcement...

    USB-Serial Adapter and Cable Options

Creating this thread to track USB-Serial adapters and cables that can be used to make a serial connection between a Classic Mac and a modern machine. In case you haven't seen it: Reconnaissance: Modern Diagnostics for Your Classic Mac USB Serial Adapters Mac hosts: adapters with the FTDI...

Reconnaissance: Modern Diagnostics for your Classic Mac

#MARCHintosh 2026 is here and I'm excited to share a project I've been working on. https://reconnaissanceapp.com You may know that many Classic Mac models have a diagnostics mode built into the ROM that you can access over a serial connection. But it's extremely cumbersome, limited, and there...

GlobalTalk - Global AppleTalk network for MARCHintosh 2024 (and beyond!)

Ditto having to disable the SNMP extensions or I was getting a crash on startup on 7.5.5 (on a IIfx i.e. 68030). These are the extensions to disable: Also, @slomacuser are you using Open Transport networking? Apple Internet Router is not compatible. If you installed it, it's possible to...

GlobalTalk - Global AppleTalk network for MARCHintosh 2024 (and beyond!)

Indeed I am on MacTCP 2.0.6 (System 7.5.5). There isn't any readable text over to the right, but there are a few normal-looking entries in the log too, as seen here.

    Power Macintosh Bezels - 9600 / G3

Thanks, I have a digital vernier calipers so I'll give it a go and see what happens. Fortunately, the 600e bezel isn't curved across the front so that should simplify things a bit.

    Power Macintosh Bezels - 9600 / G3

These are awesome! I printed the CD-ROM bezel for my G3 Tower and it looks great! What is your process for initially creating a 3D model for these? Do you start with a 3D scan? The bezel on the front of the AppleCD 600e enclosure is made out of the plastic that turns to dust when you look at it...

GlobalTalk - Global AppleTalk network for MARCHintosh 2024 (and beyond!)

Is anyone else seeing gobbledygook in their Apple Internet Router Log? I see the same message repeated over and over again so I'm thinking something is pointing to an incorrect memory location rather than it being something like a character encoding issue. Seeing this kind of thing always makes...

My Macintosh LC Has Normal Volume Error Chimes, All Other Sounds Are Quiet

It does not make a difference for me. Also, I was booting the same BlueSCSI on my "quiet" and "normal" IIci.

My Macintosh LC Has Normal Volume Error Chimes, All Other Sounds Are Quiet

Very interesting, I have a IIci board that has a similar but not identical condition. The startup chime is much quieter than my other IIci boards. That's true of a cold boot just after power on and after a warm reset. But all other sounds, such as alert sounds, are the expected volume level. I...

Is it my Logic Boards (IIvx, IIci, Performa 600, and Quadra 650) or my Power Supply (Delta SMP-120EB)?

I checked pins 2-4 (+5 VDC) vs pin 5 (ground) on a working IIci logic board and measured 10.8 ohms.

Reattaching an Apple badge onto a compact Mac

I would give FastCap SpeedTape a try. It's incredibly sticky and I've used it to reattach stickers and even rubber feet where the adhesive has come off.

Replacement headphone jack for Macintosh IIci and similar logic boards

Hosiden! That indeed matches the manufacturer symbol on my original. I measured the height from the board to the center of the jack to be apparently 8mm, and with the helpful info from @dougg3 I was able to dig up an old datasheet . The original is very similar to the Hosiden HSJ0948-0160109...
