It is not impossible to bend the pins in the socket. Remove the card and have a look to see if any pins are bent. It could be a faulty card? Do you have any other machines (or base stations) that have a similar card?

Check the wifi card to see if one is actually installed (or reseat it if one is installed). The OS should see it automatically. What version of OS are you running right now? So it doesn't see the airport card, or can't connect to your current wifi? Some notes:

I am no electronics expert, either. But, many here are more skilled and their visual inspection could provide clues. Please upload the image of the whole board. That is a starting point. And you will likely get guidance for things to focus on, or requests for closer photos of specific areas.

I have been looking for a project like this. I finally got the parts and soldered one up, and the LED displays correctly, and it works great with a mouse. But anytime I try to plug in a keyboard, it either does nothing or freezes up the mac. Hotplugging a mouse on the USB side works fine...

Try it and see if it cures your bluetooth issues or not. I am assuming you only use the mouse with one computer at a time... and when you turn on the VPN on that computer, then mouse disconnects?

Under Preferences->General, make sure "Allow access to devices on the local network (such as printers and file servers)" is checked?
