I found a Power Mac 9600/200 on FB Marketplace and traded for it. Cleaned it up, replaced the PRAM battery, checked the caps. Powered it up and it worked fine. Booted into Mac OS. It came with a Sonnet G3 450 and it booted into MacOS, with Sonnet splash screen each time. I used it for about a week, put in a flashed Sun Radeon 7000 and it was working great connected via DVI. Added 128MB of RAM. It was running on a 36GB 80 pin SCSI drive with a converter. Everything about the computer seemed to be working ok.
Then the old hard drive it came with died. I was playing a game and the system froze. Restarted, disk ?. The drive spins up, makes some noise like it wants to boot but doesn’t. No strange noises, it just doesn’t detect a disk. It’s 20 years old, so not too surprised. Bought a different SCSI drive, formatted with FWB Disk took ans its not an Apple drive, installed Mac OS on that. No issues.
Tried to install the Sonnet v2.3.1 software and it installed. Restarted. Now the system freezes before it displays the Sonnet extension. It boots, loads the startup screen and then freeze. No matter what I do it will not successfully enable Sonnet Crescendo. No extension boot, works fine. Boots fine without Crescendo.
I’ve spent hours on this. Reinstalling Mac OS. 9.1, 8. Different versions of Crescendo. Different SCSI drives. Removing every extension except Crescendo. Using the FWB disk tool to update the drivers. Following the sonnet install directions. Resetting PRAM, resetting via the little red button on the main board.
is there something I’m missing? What is the correct process to freshly install MacOS and then install Crescendo on a 9600/200? The system worked just fine until the drive died and was replaced. Not it absolutely refuses to load Crescendo which seems like it should be a straightforward software load?
