PPC Altivec Intelligence: My Little MARCHintosh Project

Ok, big breakthrough in #Altivec Intelligence. Gemini helped me build a modern-ish version of libcurl and openssh in a way that can build for iOS 4.3+ and Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger+. So with this, it is possible to make an app that can do modern networking with TLS 1.2 support. Something that these...

[Discussion] Use of AI/LLM in the retro community

@wottle this is amazing! I really want to see the project after you open it up on GitHub. And yeah, these are exactly my findings as well. I don't want to discourage non-software developers from doing vibe coding. But do know, that in the current state of the AI technology, it does need a lot of...

[Discussion] Use of AI/LLM in the retro community

Thanks for starting this thread. I think everyone has really great points. I will throw my personal opinion into the ring as a software developer, I like retro tech because its fun and I like making my old tech do things no one would have expected it could do, or at least it can no longer do due...

PPC Altivec Intelligence: My Little MARCHintosh Project

I have used AI to write Applescripts (and it is much better than I am at AppleScript). But for this project, it's pure Objective-C assistant. This doesn't try to automate tasks on old Macs. It just helps you vibe-code apps that will run on old Macs.

    MARCHintosh 2026 Projects

I posted in the Software Development section, but I thought I would cross-post here, this is my little #MARCHintosh project:

PPC Altivec Intelligence: My Little MARCHintosh Project

Hello everyone, this is my little #MARCHintosh project: Altivec Intelligence is a containerized cross-compile environment that is built for retro tech-enthusiasts that want to build software for their retro Mac and iOS device. It builds Mac apps that run on all Macs with 10.4 Tiger and up...

An Introduction: My iMac G4 "Ichigo Daifuku"

@akator thanks! I will try this! so cool!

An Introduction: My iMac G4 "Ichigo Daifuku"

It can.... but it's not very nice. It's vga out only. And when the screen is present, it's mirroring only. So it's not really good for a pro dual display setup. But I did get a cheap Chinese vga capture device from aliexpress and it did work. But yeah, vga... not super clear.

G4 iMac and its intense heat. A brainstorm.

I think the issue with telling if they are warm is that the plastic shell does not get warm even if the inside metal shell does. But I can definitely feel the warmth in the base of the neck and from the flowing out. When I push my 1.25ghz hard for hours on end, they are definitely warm. But...

G4 iMac and its intense heat. A brainstorm.

I should preface this by saying I have a 1.25GHz model and I run it at 75% CPU constantly for hours and it never overheats. But you are right, the bottom gets warm. I think the metal-inner-shell-based cooling system works well, even though the plastic shell outer-shell keeps all the heat inside...

An Introduction: My iMac G4 "Ichigo Daifuku"

I really want to do this display upgrade seen in this video on one of the broken leftover iMacs, but I don't think I have the skills or the patience to painfully wire through the EDP connector 1 wire at a time like that. But those displays he showed are super nice spec wise and cheap AliExpress...

An Introduction: My iMac G4 "Ichigo Daifuku"

Thanks for the reply, yeah let's share the love haha. I am a little surprised because in another forum JDW mentioned that these Macs don't get enough love. And I wonder why? They're so iconic. Like such an adorable, odd-ball, design. With brilliant solutions for things like the power supply...

Who Am I... The Power PC Performas

I was going to ask where we could suggest some board consolidation. I am open to ideas but the boards are split in a very fine grain way and considering the volume of the forum is not super high, it might make sense to consolidate a lot of boards. Also, there are very strange separations like on...

An Introduction: My iMac G4 "Ichigo Daifuku"

Getting this iMac to work properly was kind of an ordeal. I even contacted Kay Koba from this forum for help. He offered me just the kind of positive vibes I needed. I ended up buying 3 junk ones in order to get 1 fully functional one that was 1.25GHz. Something about the hot Japanese summers...

An Introduction: My iMac G4 "Ichigo Daifuku"

Hey folks, I have been working to get my iMac G4 to a state where I could share it with everyone here, so please give me a moment to introduce いちご大福 (Ichigo Daifuku). When I was in high school, I was becoming so obsessed with Macs (mostly because of the promise of OS X). When the iMac G4 was...

iMac G5 ALS 20" Thermal Repair

I also just noticed in the service manual that there is also a hidden thermal contact on the back of the logic board. So I am not sure if you removed the whole logic board or not or just the heatsink that you can see when you open the computer. If you had not already removed the logic board, you...

iMac G5 ALS 20" Thermal Repair

Sorry, I don't have a solution to your problem. But I remember those iMac G5 ALS models as being so cool when I was a genius at the Apple Store way back in the day. So easy to open and repair everything. Of course, always the reason they failed was caps... even back in 2008-11 when I was doing...

    A very special Mac Portable

Totally! I usually hang out in the G4/G5 section here because those were my high school days. I recently got my dream high school set up, an iMac G4 17" 1.25 GHz and I maxed it out. I am having a blast. While the G4/G5 area of this forum is kind of quiet now, I am confident it will only get more...

    A very special Mac Portable

Thanks so much for the video. I'm relatively new to the retro Mac community... because when I started using Macs in 2001 they weren't retro, they were just old lol. But anyway, I wanted to say I really enjoyed the video and have watched several others. I like your approach and clarity and it is...

Tutorial: How to Develop Original iPhone Apps in 2025

I originally wrote this article as a followup on my article on how to get iPhone development working on PowerPC Macs like my iMacG4. But as I was writing it I realized, it had nothing to do with the host Mac and was all about the Original iPhone. So I changed the title and the focus a bit, and I...
