I think the "other" Mac site has shuffled off this mortal coil. I feel really bad for folks caught in the midst of buy/sell transactions...
Coordinate with them (no one likes a bot scraper they don't know about and might spend their time trying to block you if they don't know) - also there's been some big gaps of data loss too.grab a full offline backup of the forum
And i think before his login in August he had gone a month before without signing in(to the point where I asked in some thread if anyone heard from him and knew if he was at least alive, but someone linked to his personal mastedon page where as you mentioned he's still active)I'd normally not be concerned about it, except for that Cory has been MIA since... May I think? He last logged in in August, but hadn't posted since May. He's still active on social media so it's clearer than ever that he's just lost interest in the site. No clue what wthww is up to. I wish they'd just pass the torch off to someone new like Tom L. did back in around 2009. There's 24 years of history and knowledge on that site that don't deserve to be lost.
If/when it does come back up, I'm going to take the initiative to grab a full offline backup of the forum. Wayback machine has never done a good job indexing it.
I don't think I'd get very far trying to coordinate with them, with how inactive they are unfortunately. At the very least, I'd make sure the scraper isn't hammering the site like the god-awful AI scrapers are.Coordinate with them (no one likes a bot scraper they don't know about and might spend their time trying to block you if they don't know) - also there's been some big gaps of data loss too.
TD has an offline backup with multiple people having access to it in case one of us go MIA - I had planned to publish it yearly (with images, files, etc) to archive.org as a zip, but haven't done so yet. Probably time to pick up that project again now - https://tinkerdifferent.com/threads/public-archives-of-td-wip.296/
maybe it can be spread out among multiple people as well so it's not all coming from the same user/IP.I don't think I'd get very far trying to coordinate with them, with how inactive they are unfortunately. wthww only shows up when they're doing technical stuff related to the site - I think he was more into the Mac stuff a long time ago but not anymore. The two mods are defor and Gorgonops. Defor was brought on as a mod for the trading post - don't know what his current responsibilities are, but he hasn't responded to any of the threads inquiring about site leadership. Gorgonops is still active on VCF under a different username, but I don't think he's had involvement in 68kmla for a few years now.And i think before his login in August he had gone a month before without signing in(to the point where I asked in some thread if anyone heard from him and knew if he was at least alive, but someone linked to his personal mastedon page where as you mentioned he's still active)
No clue what's up with wthww, from what I heard he doesn't really have an interest in old Macs and was mostly brought on for his "ability" to do the tech admin side. Tried doing some Googling but idk if he reuses that screenname anywhere else, but it's pretty clear he doesn't have the time/interest to keep it running. Even ignoring this outage(Which could be the hosting providers fault), look at the time that email was broken for 6+ months preventing notifications(less of a big deal) and new user registrations/password resets(much bigger deal). At VCFMW I was talking with someone who's a pretty involved member of the community and the 68kmla came up, and he was like "yeah i tried registering but never got an email"
There's 2 other mods on the site(forget their usernames)
one has like, an anime girl as an avatar and was semi active, but someone mentioned that they are just a mod for the trading post section? The other, I forget the name/avatar, but they've been around forever IIRC but i don't think they're active at all.
I know there are a bunch of long-standing members of the MLA(myself included) that would be more than willing to take on the site and keep it running smoothly, but unfortunately I don't see cory or wthww to be willing to pass on the torch.
I'm down for that if other members are willing to coordinate.maybe it can be spread out among multiple people as well so it's not all coming from the same user/IP.
