Adapting HPV Card for compatibility with 6100/G3

Another TinkerTale from the crypt resurfaces, but I'm playing with it a bit again after having shelved it for many years.

HPV's not supported by the 6100 due to its length which interferes with the OEM 3.5" HDD,. This is no longer a factor in the SD age. I'd riginally planned to use a 2.5" Savvio SCA server drive when I put it away, but SD will be much better in terms of the power/cooling budget and SCA Drive are better suited to a Fast/Wide SCSI II capable system setup like the JackHammer in my Radius 81/110.

Regarding HPV/G3, Sonnet didn't support it for the same reasons Apple didn't, but mentioned air circulation problems, probably due to an air dam created by the VRAM SIMMs.

Finally, I emailed Sonnet myself and received the following statement:
All our cards work with the AV cards in the 61XX machines. We do not support the HPV card since it was never designed to go into the 61XX machines. We don't recommend it's use and it's design tends to cause crashing as well as overheating since it's bigger than the AV card. It cuts the air circulation down in a machine that is already not very well ventilated.

50mm x 15mm form factor can nestle between the caps. 60mm x 15mm form factor will sit atop the caps whilst remaining aligned in the vertical plane with the exit venting.

Replacement backplane bracket eliminates need for the metal bracket while sealing the exit duct/case interface. Printed bracket with ducting with vents will support HPV parallel to the deck and the G3 card perpendicular to both.

Lots of vertical clearance to duct intake to run straignt from front corner case vent straight across the heatsink of the G3 card.

Following this closely, as I have a 6100 with a Sonnet G3 as one of my future projects.
And I'm quite sure I have an HPV card stored.

Great, it'll be good to see how things work out between the two machines. 6100/60 or 6100/66?

I'll be ordering the 60mm x 60mm x 15mm fan I think? Time to fake up some ductwork a/o the replacement chassis in clear plexi.

This cooling mod should work fine with my trio of 1/2MB HPV Cards, but my 2/4 HPV has a VGA HD15 connector blocking the fan and its output as pictured above. Dunno if that's true of all high the end 2/4HPV cards, but that's the case with mine. However, makes no nevermind as that treasure is stored away in the Radius 81/110 target machine. Cubic available in the big metal can allows for it to co-exist with all three NuBus Cards installed.

Still wondering about the SD from somethingorother SCSI setup, but I think I'll run from an external drive for testing purposes.

If I can make time to do some prototyping for the ductwork tomorrow, I think I'll go ahead and order the blower.

The only images of the ducting remain trapped within what I use for a brain. Cardboard mockup is plan for today, given successful search for a Sonnet Adapter.

Hoping to set it so the 6100 model can be the basis for mounting the card inverted in the NuBus slot in 7100/8100 per Micromac/Sonnet adapters.

Here you can see the exit for the 50mm x 15mm Blower supporting the printout of the 60mm x 15mm Blower. Mounted parallel to the board there's a tad more than 10mm above for the intake ducting, but planning to angle it up a bit toward the backplane plate for greater efficiency..

Realized I've based my mental imaging on the Apple NuBus Adapter Bracket. Gotta find one of my Sonnet A/V-HPV Adapters for comparison and then I can start playing in AI.

Moar pics, found the Sonnet Adapter board and yet another HPV 1/2MB card:



the three Newertech G3 cards are aligned. Neither Sonnet not Newertech fits the 6100 in stock form. Only my NuBus Adapter Bracket works as is. Had to loosen the bolts to angle both 7100/8100 adapters up a tad so they slotted into the ribs of the heatsink. looking from the top rear, the upper left corner interferes with the CD cage, so the printed version will be trimmed down to fit



in this one the NuBus connector blanks are aligned.

Only found the Sonnet adapter board, but found a pair of Crescendo L2/400/512 G3s I got from them on clearance . . .
. . . forgot about them, I have soooo much stuff.
