Do any of you know how to display the Frame Rate in Doom II or Marathon or Wolfenstein 3D or Dark Forces?

I'm overclocking my Color Classic Mystic and want to show before/after FPS.

Yes, I am wondering how to invoke an in-game console on the Mac version, but so far, I've not figured out a way.

I used Download #2 (doomII.SIT) from the garden, if you adjust the screen size in options it shows a FPS counter

Thousands of colors is slow

256 colors is fast!

Thank you, Eric!

I already filmed the games segment of my video last night, and I don't have time to add new content to that, but just to confirm, when you changed screen size in Doom II, you were given an option for FPS, or it was automatic? I ask because I've changed the screen size in the past but never noticed an FPS indicator. Not sure which of the Macintosh Garden downloads I used, but it was either the first or second, I think. But would one have that feature and not the other?

It was automatic, surprised me at first as I was going to poke around but the number just showed up.

I was filming and editing last night and had no time to test that. My time this evening is also limited, but just to quickly confirm, can you tell me the exact steps that need to be done?

For example...

1. Launch Doom II.
2. Change Screen Size slider to anything at all.
3. Play game and enjoy FPS data!

But I think I've done the above two steps before and never saw the FPS. Note I am using System 7.1.

I'm on 8.6 on my 9600 - but yes thats exactly what I did, open Doom, change slider, see data. (I didnt play, just saw the fps on the demo and reported results) I read there was a menu holding S at startup but that did nothing (though i did hold S one time, but not the other time, showed the same)

Thanks.

Well, I need to test it again, but in all my countless hours and days and weeks of testing with Doom II, no screen size changes I ever made resulted in FPS showing. So the key difference here would appear to be the fact I am using a 68K Mac while you are on a PPC machine.

I will test Doom II tonight after work and report back.

I appreciate your time and helpfulness, Eric!

Eric,

I just confirmed that FPS does not appear on my 68K Mac after changing the screen size. So what you are seeing is either a PPC only feature or maybe there was some code entered in the past on your machine that enabled it.

Anyway, thank you!

Very interesting.

On my Color Classic Mystic (LC575 motherboard) with 640x480 VGA mod, regardless of my attempts to change the display size, FPS will not display at all in Doom II.

Since it displays on your CCII with the stock resolution, I am now curious as to the technical reasons why it will not display on my VGA Mystic.

I was able to get FPS to display in Marathon though. I kind person in the comments under my YouTube video wrote that it is done by pressing the Shift and ? keys.
