Hi,
Posting here instead of PowerPC because I think what I need is a lesson in how the analog board and logic board interact and communicate in a compact mac. We are attempting the infamous Takky Mod and we are stuck! It tries to boot, we hear that beautiful chime, but most of the machine doesn't seem to be getting power.
For those of you who haven't seen it before, a Takky mod is putting a PowerPC logic board into a Color Classic and splicing two cable harnesses together to make it work. You also have to modify the case a little to make it fit, and there's a few other jumpers that need to be added to the analog board. We followed the instructions from powercc.org.
I have a 300mhz 6500 Logic Board bought from Ebay. It supposedly came from a working machine, but I haven't been able to test it myself. It looks to be in great shape. Previously this machine had an LC550 (Color Classic II mod) board in it and ran perfectly fine.
When you flip the switch on the back after it's plugged in, it makes an electricity noise. When we hit the power button the keyboard, it makes the startup noise and the 12v fan in the case turns on. The CRT does not turn on and does not seem to be getting any power. There's no static on the monitor like you'd expect. We've hit buttons on the keyboard that would hopefully make an error beep and we can't get it to do anything other than ctrl+command+power key to have it restart.
The CRT and analog board did work before the Takky mod. Since then we have recapped the analog board and followed JDW's beefy analog component upgrade video. Unfortunately, we did not test the analog board after the new caps---but I'm pretty confident in my soldering.
The fan on logic board is not turning on, but to be perfectly honest I'm not confident in the new connector I have on there. At one point the LED in the front turned on but it isn't currently after taking it apart and putting it back together a few times. Or maybe we dreamed it turned on before?
There's no IDE, I have a Zulu SCSI that did work previously so I did not wire in the power or sense line into the harness for the IDE because it wasn't going to be used. Currently we do not have the floppy drive in there either, I wanted to eliminate the tangle that is the new harness.
Any thoughts for me? I don't know enough about the Color Classic (perhaps it was hubris to attempt this mod). Rewiring the harness made our brains bleed, but we've triple checked it with a multimeter and it looks okay. To be perfectly honest we're too chickenshit to use the multimeter with the machine running and the case off, but that's probably the next step. Though I don't know what I'd be looking for.
Any advice would be helpful! And don't worry, when she's up and running I'll share some glorious photos.
