Good luck with your Compaq Portable I. I'm a big fan of that machine, having fixed one up myself. There's lots of great information about that machine available online, if you want to read the highlights of my restoration, check out this article on my bLog.

The 8-Bit guys video series on restoring this was probably the single most helpful resource I encountered.

MS-DOS 5.0 and 6.22 boot fine on that machine. I'm still looking for disk images for Compaq DOS 2.0 and Compaq Basic that would have shipped with the machine in 1983.
