Back in the day, there was a tool that one could punch a hole through the top corner opposing the locking corner to convert a 720k or 800k floppy disk to 1.44 MB. That wasn't guaranteed, but it worked most of the time, right?

If you had a 720k or 800k disc, it would still work in the newer drives, but only at. disc, thus allowing newer drives to identify the floppy as a high density one. Users could. reformat the floppy as higher density, and 'presto' you got twice the storage size.
