I picked up a few compact macs from a guy on craigslist and upon inspection, one of them has a missing brightness knob! I can poke a finger at the potentiometer, but I can’t exactly turn it. Maybe a rubber band could do the trick—like the continuous cord on some older Hunter Douglass window shades, but then I figured I could borrow one from another mac and make a 3D model.

So, after some careful measuring and thinking of the best way to get the recessed inside piece that holds onto the pot stem to print without messy supports, I came up with a two piece design. Depending on your printer, it can take a bit of cleanup to get the part to slip all the way onto the potentiometer, but once you get it all the way on, it works great!

I suspect my SE had its analog board replaced, and whoever did the deed forgot to transfer the knob from the old one onto the new one before assembly. At that point, it was maybe a hassle, so it sat in a drawer or something. In any case it is now long gone. If anyone else is in the same spot, here is my chance to give a little back:
