Today (March 19th) is Escape Velocity: Nova's 20th birthday! The EV:Nova community today is larger than ever and there's a ton of exciting things happening! Escape Velocity was the one game my Windows friends envied that they could only play at my house. It's open ended, explore, do what you want was really something unique at the time and has me coming back to it again and again.

Cosmic Frontier is a KickStarter (I'm a backer) thats engine will be compatible with EV:N resources https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/cosmicfrontier/cosmic-frontier-override/posts
There is even an Escape Velocity Nova board game which has been archived. I've been considering doing a Print On Demand version for myself, though there are 600 cards and would need to get the metadata logged first to build a deck, then just print the 30-40 cards for the deck.
Play on modern Windows http://escape-velocity.games/
Endless Sky - A new opensource game that is very much inline with EV:N https://store.steampowered.com/app/404410/Endless_Sky/
Vintage Mac Play - https://macintoshgarden.org/games/escape-velocity-nova - Take special note on the serial instructions - unfortunately the Ambrosia's Registration DRM required online and time sensitive registration.
