Hello,

New to this forum via the 68kMLA. This is a bit of a newer Mac issue. I’ve got a 2008 Mac Pro that I needed to change the DVD drive in. I also added a second while I was at it. These are SATA drives that I got from OWC that are supposed to work with this model via the StarTech ATA to SATA adapters supplied by OWC. The drives work, are recognized, and read discs without any issue at all. The issue I have is when attempting to burn with Disk Utility. While the drive is starting the burn, it takes a while to queue up, but then after it does that, the burn makes practically no progress and the entire machine freezes…hard. By that I mean no clock, no mouse, nothing. Doesn’t even drop into a command line mode. This is using OS X 10.6.8. I’m not sure if it is the adapters causing these issues, as it happens with either drive when I try, or if it is an OS error. Not sure how to ferret out the cause.

Forget about using SATA/IDE adapters if your drives are already SATA. There should be two extra SATA ports on the motherboard. Check my thread here for some pics of a MacPro3,1 about adding two SATA drives in the optical area. See these two ports with the red and orange cables?
