You may need a IIsi or 32bit clean ROM for your SE/30 for it to use those SIMMs. Also, SE/30s are very picky about banking and mixing (trying them in a different bank and/or removing other SIMMs you might have in there may help). I've used these 4 x 16MB PurpleRAM successfully in an SE/30 with both their PurpleROM and with MacROMinatorII ROM SIMMs.

siliconinsider usually does a great job. I have 4x4MB SIMMs from him in my SE/30 which work great! The SE/30 however is very picky about RAM. Did you install them correctly? What are the symptoms?

Also without a customized/updated ROM that skips the RAM check, the time-to-splash screen can be several minutes with a gray screen and a responsive cursor. The RAM check was designed when 8MB was the standard max and the 64MB check can be a lot longer.

1) Contact SiliconInsider through Tindie.

2) Did you try only populating the lower 4 banks of RAM?

I filled all 8 slots and they seemed a little loose so I printed out the RAM SIM clips and put them on which seemed to hold them tighter in the slots. ( There is one slot clip broken) but as I said the simms seemed OK with the clips in place. And I diid put the old ram back in after to retest it and the SE/30 is still fine with the old RAM (4x4MB SIMMS and 4x1MB SIMMS).

As I have 8 of the purple 16MB SIMMS I just filled all the slots. I even tried just four and mixed them up a bit (BANKS one and two) and it didnt make any difference. I have emailed the vendor and am awaiting a reply.

I get the boot chime then a weird pattern on the screen, not the jailbars but something like this:

As I said, the SE/30 is fine right now with the old 20 MB in it, its just the new ram that gives me this.

You said you have a ROM-inator II ROM SIMM and I can tell you for a fact that is likely your trouble because the PCB is very thin. That remains true even if you had no issues prior to installing your new RAM. Even with ROM Clips, you may have trouble. I had my stock ROM SIMM slot removed and a new one with metal retainer clips installed, and that solved all my ROM SIMM issues.

Of course, if your RAM SIMMs are not making great contact, that would be a secondary issue.

Very likely you have two issues pertaining to slot contacts going on at the same time.

I'd recommend you keep all eight 16MB SIMMs installed until you read through the following thread and fully understand how 16MB RAM SIMM banking works. It's very fiddly. But with all slots filled, the only issues you'd have pertain to what I just said — questionable socket connectivity.

I got a message back from siliconinsider saying the thin board of the SIMMs is a know issue with the SE/30s dodgy slots and suggested that a number of people have had success by using kapton tape on the back of the SIMMs as a shim to tighten the connection to the slot. I will give it a go.
