Hello everybody, I recently got this Apple III Plus bundle, as you can see the top shell is damaged (not too worried I can find a replacement) it included some software and such and it works. Currently it's on its way to me. Now I've heard of Apple iii's and only recently about the iii Plus How rare is this iteration of the Apple III? This looks to be a very low serial number yes, no? Looking to hear what all you guys think.

I named it #8003 Apple Monster because it was serial number 8003. The Apple III is massive as it was wider than the Apple II series taking up practically the whole desk of an everyday office worker. Almost as big as the IBM 8086 case?

I think it is one of the relatively few Apple III+ that went off the assembly line to the market.

Apple produced about 120,000 Apple III units, including Apple III Plus. That may seem many, but it is much lower than the Apple II series. The Apple III project and production had a lot of issues ranging from design to post-sales support. Some people at Apple admitted that they rushed with the process, which was a colossal waste. Steve Wozniak mentioned that it had 100% hardware failures. Perhaps it tended to become too hot, not having sufficient cooling.

Despite the dim spotlighting on the Apple III, it was a real learning experience and led to better-designed products.

Nowadays, it is a fun project! 🤩 🤓

Seller tested it but I know for a fact I’ll never find a plus let alone an apple iii for that price ever again. I already found a seller with a spare lid I can swap to fix the broken one and it’s $75.

Hey @jajan547! Look! Here is a restored "almost original" condition of a copy of the advertisement for the Apple III circa 1980.

Enjoy! :) If you ever travel back to 1980, please write to Apple at 10260 Brandley Dr, Cupertino, CA 95014. I am confident you will get a sweet deal on a brand new Apple III+ for a super low price! 😁

Good news is if any chips have gone haywire I have all of the important ROMs and such, also apparently a Floppy Emu is somewhat compatible with the Apple III so long as you make the necessary cable (shouldn't be too difficult) some people have sold them in the past but now they're gone so I'll probably make a couple and if anyone want's one I'll probably have spares.

Wonderful because Apple III software is almost impossible to find

Indeed! :D Apple III was short-lived and not really geared towards home users but businesses, so there was not much to go on regarding software, etc.

Hey @jajan547, I found some guide books for the Apple III in PDF that you may want to check out. I'll upload those here on TD.

So, a catalog from Fall 1981 to Winter 1982 from Apple featured Apple II and Apple III computers with the hardware and software for home and business use. You can download Apple In Depth: A reference guide to Apple products here on TinkerDifferent.

Apple touted the Apple III as a "Professional" computer. In that catalog is detailed information about the software and hardware that Apple had for the Apple III.
