That's a very specialized repair that very few people do. Glad you decided to try and wrote about it!

From what I understand it's more of problem in hot and humid climates so I don't really see that in Canada.

There's a great video about this problem on YouTube:

Vinegar Syndrome, a disease of LCD panel. It can be repaired by renewing the polarizer film

People have described the tunneling problem on early Powerbook black and white active matrix displays as vinegar syndrome as well but I don't think it's the same issue. In that case the screen looks fine but then the corners gradually turn more and more black.
