iMac G5 wont chime anymore

Hi all,

I pulled the iMac G5 (no isight) out of storage and opened it up and cleaned out the fans as last time (~3 months ago) I remembered it was loud! I put it back together and now... no signs of life. Not quite sure where to start here - I didn't do much in the G5 days with Macs. I get no signs of power, no fans nothing. I re-seated the ram, also tried without the ram chip installed, no difference. Tried both power buttons on the keyboard and the back.

What should I try next?

Edit: I see Debug LED1 turn on momentarily when the power cord is inserted.
Pulled open the PSU - few caps are bulged with some brown goop coming out. Fuse is fine.

I've heard these G5 iMacs are notorious for bad PSU capacitors, so I think that a full system recap would be a great place to start troubleshooting.

I concur with @Kai Robinson : recap time!

I'm not looking forward to when my iMac G5 does that. As it is, it needs a new LCD (multicolored lines everywhere!)

If it not cost or time prohibitive for you, I'd recap the entire machine. These units are indeed notorious for capacitor failure. The nichicon caps used (Here's the scoop) were part of a bad series production runs in the early 2000s and unfortunately made it into alot of PPC imacg5s.

So far I've replaced 8 caps in my iMac G5. It was just to get it up and running. Will do the rest when I feel like it. Caps are pretty cheap these days, even good ones.

That assumes you can get hold of any - most of the ones i have are stockpiled, anything from Mouser that's a tantalum is about 2 years backordered (!)...

Yes, RS always say there are plenty, but the moment you look in the basket, they're backordered to hell.
