When I first came to Japan in 1994, one of the biggest surprises was that they sold beer in the vending machines. Not that I cared since I am not a beer drinker, but it was rather striking to see that for the first time.

But the biggest shock came when I started using them and found they never ever stole my money, and they always worked well to kick out the thing you bought. Not sure if vending machines in the US have improved since then, but my experience in the 80's and early 90's with such machines in the US was quite poor.

Heh! My friend took over the soda/beer vending machine at his frat in college in the 70s. Every other bottle was an empty, so a beer cost 2x a soda.

Current vending machines over her still pocket your money on a regular basis in the break room at work . . .
, , , if only they'd do the same beer trick. :p

Though it'd be a lot easier on a computerized machine.

taging @Kay K.M.Mods and @JDW as the two people I know in Japan.

I thought this was neat. They have some vending machines that are from the 80s. And heat food using ovens or something.
Holy cow! this vending machine museum is near my house. Exactly 10km away, I will take @JDW when he comes to Tokyo. Ah, whoever comes, I'll take you. If you come to Tokyo!
