Appreciate the reminder. I was looking at my collection and couldn’t remember if I had taken the battery out of my TAM. I get kind of lazy with my PowerMacs because they have the 4.5v box batteries that I’ve seen fewer horror stories from.

Popped open the back and sure enough, I still had the battery in there. Dead as a door nail, so I removed it. Popped open the plastic case and looks like the corrosion had started.

Seriously, do an inventory and remove the batteries as soon as you pick up a new machine! Thanks again!

It's easy to fall into this trap, the main reason there are less horror stories is probably just because they are newer :)

I have two Apple Tanzina boards out of a couple of clones on my desk ATM and both had batteries leak, Lots or rotted traces on both, both had a bunch of bad data buffers and one had a bad ROM chip. One has been revived but the other is running rings around me, I suspect that has trace rot on the inner layers which are not fun to try and trace out when you don't have schematics.....

i went through my collection and got rid of all the easy to remove batteries. but that means i have some computers like iMacs (g3 and g4) that prolly still have batteries.

You can reach the iMac G3 battery through the opening meant for installing RAM or Airport Cards. It's not super easy, but not too hard to get it out.

I don't think all G3s have that opening - I had a 333MHz model a while back and think the whole logic board tray needed be removed? Although even that wasn't too terribly difficult

yes you remember correctly. the 333MHz last of the cd tray loaders. which I agree isn't too terribly difficult.. but "too terribly difficult" is still harder then easy.

i only did the easy ones. (which was still a lot of computers for me)

i guess i was just saying where i was on this project. and i kinda wish i removed the batteries as i got the computers. (which i do now) ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
