Hi! I finally got to purchase a Mac SE/30. The seller listed its condition as unknown, and while it remained Schrodinger's Mac I remained a happy and content person. Now that it has arrived, I opened it and its condition couldn't be any worse!

I'll include some pictures of the damage. I found the exploded battery and even a capacitor loose in the computer case.

So my question: where can I go from here? Should I count my losses and give up (or try to resell it for parts), or is there still hope for this poor Mac (and for me)?

Thank you very much in advance!

from my previous experience, I woudl 1. start by cleaning the board and start checking connections, sometimes it looks worse than what it actually is. iand depending on your experience I would consider getting a bolle reloaded and transplanting everythign to the new machine -- its a process that will take a lot of time and problem solving so be prepared for that

Transplanting the components to a newly fabricated circuit board is your only option (if you are good at soldering). Otherwise, you can ask someone to do this for you or sell the Mac as-is.

Check the responses to your Reddit thread, a guy offered a very reasonable deal on a logic board, analog board, case, and CRT. No PSU. Unless your board is easily repairable, which it likely is not, you will be a couple hundred dollars into making this a working machine.

You may luck out once you clean the board though, it's possible the damage is worse than it appears. 🤞🏻

Looks like the GLUE chip is going to be dead at minimum. +1 to what the others said. There are still salvageable chips on that board so there is still some value. You can make it a fun project if you want to learn and have patience or sell it for parts. Exactly what the others said. Clean it first to see how bad it is.

That was me. Here's the details of the machine. https://www.inventorydifferent.com/#!/devices/307

I just shipped one recently and it cost about $50 for the shipping + packing materials, double boxed. Of course, if you're close to Charlotte, NC, you could come pick up to save on shipping. Also, I can throw in a BlueSCSI basically at cost if you want a modern HD replacement for it.
