I did a stupid thing and fired one of the little black wave washers that clamp down the bottom slider of the floppy drive into low earth orbit. So far, I haven't been able to find it, despite having a pretty good idea of where it flew off to. It's a Sony MFD-F75W.

It's these guys:

Does anyone have a source on a replacement part, or even a good name for it? Worst case, I can try to take one of the other three off and measure it to get the ID and OD. I've had the drive apart a few times trying to figure out which molecule of rust is binding it up, and I got impatient this time.

edit: inner diameter is 3mm (worn; new is probably closer to 2.5,) outer is 8mm. Not ferrous material

This is just my opinion, but I think you can be OK if you are missing just one. I'd do it if it were one of my drives :)

In another Mac forum (can’t recall its name), someone had the same problem. A replier suggested cutting out a new one out of an old 5.25” floppy. It’s about the right stiffness. The only critical dimension BTW is the center hole. You can get close the outer diameter but the center hole size is critical. On a related note, I also launched one of those into ceiling of my basement and even heard it land the mess I call my lab. After I was searchihg for an hour my wife came downstairs to see what all the fuss was. I showed her what I was looking for. She took no more than 30 seconds, showed me the fastener and said “is this it?” I took her out for a special dinner for that!
