I reached out to Tom Swain (the original creator) and he said that he no longer has the original files (darn!).

It would be so cool if Tom could share the original designs! That being said, I imagine a template could be pretty easily whipped up in Solidworks using their sheet metal tools — solely to make a foldable template, not for sheetmetal production.

Maybe I'll take a stab at soon. Should I print "dunce" on the side of the chimney?

Wonder if you could make some educated guesses with the photos next to the real mac - eg measure the side of a plus and compare it to the photo.

Thanks for sharing, Eric! I'll definitely use it as a resource. Truthfully, I suspect it does not need to be very exacting but I'll respect the original design nonetheless.

can we modify the chimney section to accept an in-line Poptart or toaster strudel?
I think we could benefit from reusing the computers heat to passively heat delicious snacks.

We need to establish the BTU baseline before we jump into pastries; for example is there more potential for warmed puddings?

I've kept the dimensions comparable as best as I could with the limited reference material available.

However, I am making a few optimizations which may allow this to be cut and shipped in typical "letter size" (8.5" x 11") envelope. The whole assembly will be held together by tape or glue depending on the materials available.

1. I am splitting the chimney into two vertical halves
2. I am splitting the hood into two halves
3. I may separate the flap (on the rear) from the hood.

This is very much a work in progress, but this is what I've got so far:

The height is 290mm. The remaining dimensions fit it snugly on the top of a Compact Mac.

I saw this when I was looking for reference material! I thought "What a glorious monstrosity"

It seemed to. At least, the 512KE it was on never had problems. I installed a NewLife memory/SCSI upgrade so it was drawing some extra power.

But I didn't have it thermocoupled or an air flow meter at the top. So I couldn't tell you that it objectively worked.

By girlfriend (now my Ex and mother of my grown Son) at the time had the 512Ke. I visited her while she was in grad school and she had to leave me alone for an afternoon while she went to classes.

This is what happens when you leave a Mac nut alone with an afternoon to kill and all he has is scissors, Xacto knife and glue.

I am curious about this Mac chimney project....
My two cents are :
have the base of the chimney 3d printed so that it can be structurally sturdy and possibly velcro to the top of the mac
Use a cardboard box as the chimney part, or seperate 3d printable parts

Mac Chimney: Overdrive

I still need to finish the side flaps so I can release the designs for everyone to enjoy. I guess instead of paper the chimney pieces could be 3D printed flat and heated to fold them into shape?
