I'm trying my luck again with a second color ribbon, as the first one was bad on the inside (the rubber gears inside crumbled into dust).

Last time I couldn't figure out how to print in color. Can anyone give a hint?

Hi everyone,

never been too much on vintage printers, but recently I could not resist to getting a first gen Image Writer in very good conditions, which will perfectly mate my early Macs for occasional dot matrix printing fun.

To no surprise, the ribbon cartridge is completely dry and the foam roll inker is destroyed.

Sourcing spare ribbons seems also to be difficult and relying on occasional auctions of probably DOA units, at least outside US.

Can anyone please indicate a reliable and verified on line store for international shipments?

Alternatively, does anyone have any experience with refurbishing and re-inking the cartidrige?

Thanks!

I got a black ribbon of new production from a German eBay seller. Where are you?

New Color ribbons can be found in AliExpress, but they sell in sets of 5 or 6 and too expensive if it’s not for sharing.

Do you have any experience printing in color with the ImageWriter II… I’m trying to figure out how.

I’m based in Japan, one of the few countries for which eBay has no localized operations, making everything horribly difficult. Still, if you could please indicate the seller of newly fabricated or refurbished units in Germany, I will give it a look and see what it is possible to arrange. Thanks!

Here you go... https://www.ebay.com/itm/361720089486

There's also this option: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/100...14-0&pdp_ext_f={"sku_id":"12000021836614847"}
But the shipping was too expensive for me

Hello
Just to leave trace here in case is useful for others… on Discord @Fizzbinn told me to use this driver:
I’ll try ASAP and hopefully post here the results.

Its been a couple years but I’m pretty sure those Mac Palette II drivers worked for me, printing from an LCIII to an ImageWriter II. I think I printed a small JPEG picture, kinda interesting dither pattern, ….you could say artistic!

Hi Guys,

some updates from my side in regard to the Image Writer I refurbishment.
The unit came in the original box and in excellent aesthetic conditions.
However, it would just turn on and off and do nothing more.
First issue: a lot of rust. Yes, plain rust on the lower head rail. I had to disassemble, thoroughly clean and lubricate the whole assembly before the printing head could freely glide edge to edge.
As I was disassembling the body panels, I could notice that the pathetic strips of acoustic foam were crumbling away. Replaced.
All the rest was in good order, except, of course, for the ribbon.
I got two units, one still sealed and one simply stored away in a plastic bag.
In both of them, the foam rollers were disintegrated and kind of rotting away (mildew?). So I wanted to replace the foam with something similar.
At first I tried with felt, but the grip is not sufficient for winning the resistance of the ribbon (it also gets twisted, which generates additional friction). Eventually, I ended up using some foam feets 20 mm in diameter and 5 mm thick. I trimmed a hole of 8 mm and the fit is indeed very OK for the pulling head. As for the counter head, which is spring mounted, the spring is allowing a fair amount of play, but the mounting pulley is indeed asking for some 18 mm max and 4 mm, which I could not find. So I used some rubber bushings I had around and the result is OK.
As for the ink, for the sealed unit the inking was still there and I could print without any problem. Nice. Still, I wanted to try and revive the ink on the dry unit. A quick search suggested nothing less that WD40, aka "the universal magic stuff" (I'm sure that somewhere there's someone suggesting to use Coke...).
And yes, WD40 worked its magic and the ribbon could print again.
Hower, big "however"... Dosing is extremely critical. The ribbon has to remain as "dry" as possible, the ink should be a kind of greasy, waxy like compound to be transferred on the paper, not to soak it. So, I had to scrub the ribbon twice for removing the excess of WD40. Still the printed characters tend to smear off when compared to the original ink.
So, next time (assuming there will be a "next time") I will definitely try to revive the ink by using, well... plain ink. I guess one possibility could be to replace just the ribbon, it shouldn't be too complicated.
Anyhow, for casual printing even WD40 is fine, especially considering the printer is almost 40 years old...

Happy to see your progress, @Paolo B !

On my side, I was about to publish here a happy post about another success, but now I can't :(

Thanks to @Fizzbinn , I could configure the MacPalette II driver and print in color, which also meant that the color Ribbon I got from eBay and that made the long trip from Alaska to Switzerland, was in relative good shape.

Unfortunately, during the printing something went wrong, the printer did a ugly sound and all went black, no LEDs are lighting and seems dead. When I turn it on I can hear some electrical humming... maybe the power supply is dead?

Pretty frustrating!!!

Grüezi!

Mmm… Too bad to read your printer did not cooperate for long. The ugly sound is not very promising, but the fact that the leds remains off might indeed mean that it’s just an electrical issue. I’d definitely open the case to peek inside and test the power supply.

Grüezi! Although I'm more in the "Bon jour" part of Switzerland... ;)

I found a guy in 68kmla that posted about the exact problem back in 2008... but he didn't update about the solution... I'm pretty sure it's a power-related issue... So now I have a new unexpected project to work on...

Techknight posted a fairly extensive IWII refurbishment thread on 68kmla some time in the last several years. It probably didn't deal with that specific problem, but there was a lot of great information in there. Quite a bit of board level component replacement and part sourcing.
