I bought
1 https://www.ebay.com/itm/304211265676 Boot disk for system 6.0.8
1 https://www.ebay.com/itm/303903438985 System tools 6.0.8
I got 2 System tools V 6.0.8
The seller says they are the same.
Are they?
Also I bought
1 https://www.ebay.com/itm/303907559597 1.44mg boot disk system 7.1.
I get this error on my SE/30 with the standard ROM and BMOW ROMINATOR.
The seller tells me I need version 7.1 800k version instead of the HD version if you do not have the 32 bit upgrade. Has nothing to do with the disk.
Isn't the ROMINATOR 32 bit clean?
Thanks,
john

How much ram does your SE/30 have ?
i'm pretty sure 7.1 can work with dirty 32-bit. the memory control panel has an option to be in 24-bit or 32-bit. so it shouldn't matter if the SE/30 is clean or dirty 32-bit.

those disks looks like reproduction disks. Thats is, somebody downloaded the disk image and copied it to a floppy for you. ... .. so not official. fyi.

if you had a full set of system 6 disks. they would be called.
system tools
utilities 1
utilities 2
printing tools

.. so i don't know what the "boot disk" would be. but i guess it makes sense that it would be system tools....

i think its kinda sad they only sell you one disk and not the full 4 disk set ....

Dang I had my response all done, then it disappeared.
Thanks for the response Patrick.:)
Just to let you know, it's been about 15 years since I did anything with my MACs.
The SE/30 has 16mg of ram, and no pram battery.
Is the memory control panel in the on board memory?
I tried the 7.1 disc with a BMOW ROMinator II and got the same error.
The 1.44mg boot disk system 7.1 has written on it Macintosh SE, SE/30, FDHD Classic, Classic II, Color Classic. Do you think it will work on all of these?
I'll try it on a Color Classic tomorrow.
As for the boot disk for system 6.0.8 and the System tools 6.0.8 disc, that was a misleading way to sell. I'll send one back.

My SE/30 is stock and has the original ROM. It boots just fine from a hard drive where I got System 7.1 installed. No hickups.

Perhaps there's a System Enabler on your System 7.1 disk? System 7.1 could get superspecific with which computers they work with. For instance a boot disk for an LC 475 won't work on a SE/30.

Since you got a working 1.4M drive, have you considered buying a USB-floppy drive and "burn"/write your own boot disks from your modern computer? They're freely available on places like Macintosh Garden. 800k machines unfortunately need a vintage Mac to write the appropriate disk.

I found my old floppies.
I have a USB-floppy drive somewhere. Are you saying i can "burn"/write myown boot disks from my windows 7 computer?

You find the System Enabler in the Systems Folder. An SE/30 doesn't need one since it was already on the market when 7.1 was launched. But you need a Mac machine to poke around... Catch 22.

Honestly, I think writing a boot floppy in Windows is your easiest/best way forward.

I write floppies in Windows 10 with RaWrite 0.7. The program is about 20 years old now, but God Bless Microsoft's obsession with backward compatibility.

Here's a very useful Disk Tool disk. Download the first link and unstuff it. The file has the benefit that it'll unpack well on Windows and can be written to 1.44M floppy without issue on a Windows computer (no problematic resource forks or DiskCopy compression algorithms). Also, this disk will boot on your SE/30.

To unstuff the link above in Windows, use Aladdin (Stuffit) Expander 5 for Windows. It was written for Win95/98, but works like a charm in Win10.

I hope this will help you.

If you are going to do a bit of playing I have found a floppy emu is very useful but not the cheapest option. The combination of old floppy disks and drives can be very frustrating when trying to get something going. Cheers

VicNor, Wow thanks!
I think I can do that. I need to find my usb floppy drive.
Of course I can buy a new one. Then I'll find it. 😁
fred1212, I have a floppy emu, and I can barely understand how to use it.
Thanks guys. The ebay seller is very knowledgeable. But he doesn't realise that what is obvious to him is not obvious to me. So he is not thorough in his descriptions.

Yes they do. I just need to read, and reread all that info on BMOW. I haven't looked at Macs for 15 years.
I forgot a lot. And I'm a mechanical engineer, not a programer.
