Recapping a PowerMac 8600 PSU

There are PSUs that are relatively easy to recap. There's some that are tough. And then there's the PSU from my 8600. Oh my god.

All the caps appear to be glued in. That's not even the worst. The copper of the board is. It's so thick on both sides that it's impossible to de-solder any parts. Even if you use a 100W soldering iron (normally used for thick cables etc.) instead of the regular 25W ones it does not even heat it up enough to get the caps out. They're just sitting there and showing the middle finger. The warmth dissipates faster than it can be conducted towards it.

That PSU is really a piece of work. Obviously constructed to show how complicated a PSU can be build. See the photos enclosed for details.

Did anyone ever managed to get one recaped and/or has any tips?

Does anyone have the pinout of the 8600 psu? Curious if an ATX psu could be rewired (akin to rewiring for Q700, IIci etc)

I realize it has been over a year since you posted the question, and may no longer need the answer, but it looks like this info used to be available at xlr8yourmac.com. I cannot vouch for its accuracy.

Edit: Just located the full article, which was about putting the 8600 logic board in an ATX case: from the Wayback Machine

Mike had a lot of good articles on his site over the years, which are no longer available. I wonder if he would give permission for them to be hosted here? The forums he ran are probably gone forever. There was so much expertise at the time shared there. Sigh.
