My SE recently just crashed, no screen, no noises, no bong, no disk drive. I thought power supply and wanted to get inside to look at the boards anyway so just thought I'd remove the power supply to check directly. The Sony Model CR-44 power supply has a sticker on the side with pins and voltages listed, so, GREAT pins and voltages! However, measured the voltages and got 5.35 on the 5-volt pins, 13.86 on the 12 volt and -8.5 V on the -12 volt.
So, its unloaded and after searching found that the 12 volt and 5-volt lines are probably correct unloaded. I have enough respect for the CRT that I'd really rather not assemble and plug in to adjust while the CRT is exposed. Regardless, is the -8.5 V on the unloaded Sony Model CR-44 power supply the problem? Will the voltage actually go up on the negative rail when loaded? If it is the -12 volt, should I still be getting a start-up chime?
