Solved: RaSCSI and CD-ROM images from the web - how to make it work?

Well, the title sums it up pretty much I guess. I've been downloading CD-ROM images from the Mac Garden, transferred them to the RaSCSI and mounted them via the RaSCSI web interface. They do, however, not show up on the Desktop of my System 7 Mac. CD-ROM Software is installed. SCSI ID scans do not show a CD-ROM device detected. (there should there be one, shouldn't it?)

Getting the same result when trying with System 6.0.8. (yes, desktop_mgr being installed in Six)

I do wonder - does that work at all?
How to make it work?
Any tips and hints for me?

What exact CD image are you using?

What version of RaSCSI (much older versions needed the patched CD driver, latest does not)

Are you adding the CD drive/cd image before booting the mac? (you can of course change cd's after) - it should of course show up on the bus.

I can say yes it does work, I use it all the time.'

Edit: you still need the patched driver, I was mistaken https://github.com/akuker/RASCSI/wiki/Drive-Setup#Mounting_CD_ISO_or_MO_images

what format image did you use? iirc, I had to convert to .ISO before my RaSCSI made it (Oregon's trail) work for my SE/30. I also put the proper system 7 extension so that cd roms could be dealt with and mounted.

Running RaSCSI-Version: 21.12.1 6f92814. Should be about a year old, but you know - never change running a system. Any known issues with this version and CD-ROM images working?

I did NOT have the patched CD-ROM drivers installed. Downloaded and installed them. But doesn't help either. NO CD-ROM showing up on the Desktop. Tried three different images. Adding a CD-image while operating System 7.1 causes a freeze (MacsBug) btw. I have to add them before booting.

@Mu0n - how did you convert to .iso? This could be the issue. I just downloaded .toast files from the Garden and renamed them to .iso as I was under the impression that they are technically the same. They aren't?

Basically all I should need to do once I have an iso on the RaSCSI:

- Copy patched Apple CD extension to System Folder (Extensions) on the target machine
- Connecting an .iso from the RaSCSI web-interface. (Specific SCSI ID needed?)

After that it should mount the image on the desktop, right?

Version should be fine, CD support has been around since the beginning. Might be worth backing up and updating, though I don't think it'll change this issue.

Not all CDimages are equal - some toast files have some headers so they are not a "raw" image - those wont work as rascsi doesn't read/parse the files, just presents them as a raw block device.

What is the error in macsbug? (maybe has a clue, but not sure)

Could you link to the exact CD image you're testing with?

No specific ID is needed, just not a conflicting one with another device. In the web UI it should show something like:

@eric - thanks for confirming! Two images I've tried unsuccessfully:

1st download: http://macintoshgarden.org/games/super-wing-commander
1st download: http://macintoshgarden.org/games/spaceship-warlock

Maybe we can do this the other way around - could you please link to an image on the Mac Garden that you can confirm working?

@retr01 - thanks, as always, appreciate your help! But I'm not going to visit that scammer's page. He took all my uploads to the Mac Garden without asking and now makes money off it. Hope he burns in hell!

Alright, a little step further. Tools like Lido now show a CD ROM device on the assigned ID. But nothing ever gets mounted on the desktop. Hmmm.... Just tried another image (X-Wing) but same thing.

Could anyone please link to an iso file known to work? Just want to make sure its not an iso issue.

Alright, issue solved. Images are mounting as soon as I installed the patched CD-ROM extension 5.3.1 on OS 7.1 and rebooted. Mind you, this is the version recommended for System 6 and low memory Macs according to the guide eric linked to above (see post #2). Btw, my IIci has 32 MB. Not sure that qualifies for "low mem" :) ?

I previously had v5.4.2 installed which apparently wouldnt work on my 7.1 install. Maybe that helps someone else who runs into the same trouble - try the pre-patched 5.3.1.
