System 7.0.1 and 7.1 on the Plus

On my Mac Plus, I have System 6.0.8, 7.0.1, and 7.1 System Folders and switch using System Picker. I have Desktop Mgr installed in order to avoid rebuilding the desktop file each time. However, at the stage of boot where the menu bar (no options on the menubar), mouse, and background are visible, the mouse switches to the stopwatch and just hangs there. Using an image of the disk on Mini vMac I'm able to get past this by setting the emulator to 4x (or higher) and waiting a while, but I've left my physical plus for quite a while and it hangs here. I'm guessing this may be due to the slow disk I'm using (Floppy Emu HD20 emulation), but is there a good way to avoid this altogether?

Does it behave exactly the same way for each system you boot into? Because that behaviour certainly sounds like it's rebuilding the desktop in System 6.

It seems to be caused by Desktop Mgr on System 7.x. If I remove Desktop Mgr and let the desktop file be rebuilt, the slowness goes away, and even though it's been rebuilt comes back when Desktop Mgr is once again installed. The solution seems to be just having Desktop Mgr installed for 6.0.8 and not in 7.x System Folders.
