My Power Macintosh 9600/300 build is finally complete!

PM9600-G4-512M-R7K.jpg
I've replaced the CPU with a Sonnet Crescendo G4 @ 400MHz with 1MB L2 cache, replaced the stock ixMicro Twin Turbo with a Sapphire Radeon 7000 with the full Mac ROM (swapped ROM chip) and the March 2002 Radeon driver. On top of that, i've managed to scrape together 512MB of the MOST ridiculously hard to find, and most insanely priced RAM ever - 8 x 64MB 168-pin 5v EDO DIMM's.

I have a Sonnet Tango 2.0 to go in it next, and i want to try and flash the Adaptec 2940 U2W I have to get some native 68-pin SCSI action going on in there. Then - I think I need a DEC-21140 based PCI NIC to add to it because the onboard 10Mbit is just painfully slow at transferring ISO's and .toast files over.

Super!
I'll get it soon the newertech Maxpowr G4 400 Mhz for my 9600/300, 100 Mbit Apple network card and one 128 MB RAM stick. RAM for this computer is really rare and very expensive.
Have you already added a 100 Mbit network card? Does it work faster than 20? 🤔
Did you get to flash 2940 U2W?
9600 is my favorite Mac!

P.S. memory is installed from the last slots, why? I read about it on macos9lives, but there's no explanation.
My original setup in 1995 at college. I scraped together as much cash as I could, sold my Centris 650 (that machine was the true OG for me, where it all began) and got my girlfriend to charge the rest for me. It was a discounted 6100/66 from the school's bookstore. It was a real workhorse and I upgraded just about everything I could on it. Hope it's still out there.

TIL: A fast 68030 CAN play MP3 files, but will not smoothy play through anything higher than 32kbps, so they don't sound too good!

Does having an FPU make any difference?

Not sure, the one I was using (PowerBook 150) doesn’t have one. I can give it a go on my 180c (same clock, with FPU), but it has half the RAM so that will probably affect things.
Visited my best friend a few weeks ago. "I have a few old Macs if you want them". Me: :D:D:D:D:D
After a dusty trip into his attic I have a nice haul. More details on the others coming . . .but:
My first find was a Power Mac G4 MDD Dual 1ghz with a matching Apple Studio Display

Completed: (Updated)
  • Power supply was dead so I sent it off to acxelectronics on eBay for an excellent and fast repair. (OK I was lazy on this one)
  • Replaced the old noisy CPU fan with a new quiet, but powerful Silenx IXP-76-18 - 120x38mm 18dBA 90CFM hooked to 12V Power Supply connector
  • Maxed out RAM to 2GB
  • Replaced static and distorted heat damaged speaker with the OEM part found on eBay
  • Replaced spinning drive with a Samsung SSD via an IDE to SATA adapter.
  • Installed 10.4.11 Tiger.
  • Added 2nd SSD for Carbon Copy Cloner system backup: (Due the limitation of the PATA to SATA adapter board this did not work on the 100 MHz bus as a second drive, so I put the second SSD on the 66Mhz bus)
  • Period correct keyboard and mouse
  • Swapped out dual G4 1GHZ processor daughterboard for dual 1.25Ghz card (modest upgrade)
To Do:
  • Upgrade video card (Current ATI Radeon 9000 is OK, but @Action Retro inspired me to go faster ;)

I have an MDD I've been fiddling with the last year. Last modification was an ATI X800 XT gpu which I bought from Japan NIB. I replaced the smd rom for a larger capacity and flashed custom firmware, I honestly don't think you can use a beefier card!
