Visited my best friend a few weeks ago. "I have a few old Macs if you want them". Me: :D:D:D:D:D
After a dusty trip into his attic I have a nice haul. More details on the others coming . . .but:
My first find was a Power Mac G4 MDD Dual 1ghz with a matching Apple Studio Display

Completed: (Updated)
  • Power supply was dead so I sent it off to acxelectronics on eBay for an excellent and fast repair. (OK I was lazy on this one)
  • Replaced the old noisy CPU fan with a new quiet, but powerful Silenx IXP-76-18 - 120x38mm 18dBA 90CFM hooked to 12V Power Supply connector
  • Maxed out RAM to 2GB
  • Replaced static and distorted heat damaged speaker with the OEM part found on eBay
  • Replaced spinning drive with a Samsung SSD via an IDE to SATA adapter.
  • Installed 10.4.11 Tiger.
  • Added 2nd SSD for Carbon Copy Cloner system backup: (Due the limitation of the PATA to SATA adapter board this did not work on the 100 MHz bus as a second drive, so I put the second SSD on the 66Mhz bus)
  • Period correct keyboard and mouse
  • Swapped out dual G4 1GHZ processor daughterboard for dual 1.25Ghz card (modest upgrade)
To Do:
  • Upgrade video card (Current ATI Radeon 9000 is OK, but @Action Retro inspired me to go faster ;)

I have an MDD I've been fiddling with the last year. Last modification was an ATI X800 XT gpu which I bought from Japan NIB. I replaced the smd rom for a larger capacity and flashed custom firmware, I honestly don't think you can use a beefier card!

What an offer! Can't believe no one hasn't offered to take care of that baby yet.
I've been looking for a system 7 machine for a while.
Just checked the shipping price of 14.0 lbs (6.4 kg) from UK to DK -it ain't bad -does the 😎 offer still stand @Kai Robinson ?

Best regards

The Big Mess ‘O Wires Wombat is awesome. Now I can take the brilliant Unicomp mechanical keyboard with me on my classic Mac gaming. 7795AF7A-6E27-4EB5-AA8E-1F2B0FF4BD5B.jpeg

Power Mac 9600 has joined my team. The Mac I longed for when I was young. Apple has bestowed the glory of just 3 months.86539B3E-50B6-4959-BD40-30406B00384D.jpeg

Cool Mac!

It's not as fast as your 666 Mhz SE/666. :sneaky::devilish:

I see your Q700 up there! :D

@Kai Robinson Yeah, these RAMs aren't cheap. ACARD AEC-6260M (not 6280M) and SD card or CF card drive are recommended. Very fast when using a 120MB/s flash drive.

@retr01 My 9600 has a G4 card, which are not bad. Spare parts that are more than 20 years old are useful, so it feels strange.

It just occurred to me about the short product life of many Macs during the 1990s before the return of Steve Jobs to Apple. In the early 1990s. Apple's management and finances became so bad that Apple had trouble maintaining so many Mac models and segments. Like PM 9600, Macintosh IIvi, and others only lasted four months or more or less.

Apple had a great computer system, but struggles were daily with mediocre company management. Finally, Steve Jobs cut off many things and made sure the efforts were focused on one or two segments and models at a time, starting with the iMac. Slowly, new products were added as the competencies were solid. Yet, the number of products and segments remains limited. Today, Apple is worth over $3 trillion since January 2022. 🤑
