I put the original HDD back in and it chimes and the screen comes on, but it doesn't show the happy mac or boot into os9. I kept the CD drive out of it as I don't think it's working. Is the big SIMM in the logic board RAM or ROM? I also notice the smaller SIMM on the outside, which I assume is RAM expansion.
Does anyone have a source for a more modern SSD solution for this Mac?

Depending on which size/model you have here (15", 17", 20"), links to the SSD solutions I have used in my own iMacs are at the bottom of each of those links, respectively.
Note that there are significant differences in terms of jumper configurations between the models.
