Thank you very much for the feedback, Colin. That's useful info. I believe they are indeed New Old Stock (NOS) because when I bought some from RS Components 2 years ago and had Kay Koba do a pro-quality socket swap for me, when I got the board back and installed SIMMs, I ended up snapping one end off even without using much force.

And thank you, @djc6 . I've known for a while that CayMac had SIPP in the works, but after watching the video you linked, I came to realize his implementation is better than I had thought. Previously, I knew that SIPP RAM had male pins sticking out, but I was thinking they stuck out the bottom edge of the RAM module, which would mean the pins could be easily bent or you might prick yourself with the pins. But Will's implementation is to mount the pins in the middle of the module, pointing downward, making it less likely you would bend the pins or prick yourself, which is really a great idea.

So once the RAM SIMM sockets are gone from the market, unless MacEffects or someone else steps up to manufacture new sockets with metal tabs (which is probably a costly proposition), the SIPP idea is probably the best solution overall.

And not that it matters too much on an SE/30 motherboard, but it seems that the SIPP modules will sit flush with the board (lower down on the board that SIMMs).

The only real downside to the SIPP idea is that many of use already have a lot of spare SIMMs lying around, and unless you can use those in other vintage Macs, it's kind of a waste to move to SIPP. But many years into the future, that point will likely become moot.

Anyway, thanks again, and do hope this info will be useful to @naruse and everyone else reading this thread. It's been enlightening for me, and I'll probably mention a little about it in the ending segment of the new video I'm working on now, which pertains to adding RAM to the SE/30 by way of YMK's Synchr030/S.

Why is it at times like this I always think of @MacEffects coming to the rescue with a fabulous recreation! :)
Well, until that day comes, we have to choose other options.

I cannot say of the "alternatives" you link work. Where do they even source them? That's the big question. Even $10 "each" is crazy expensive.

The only "new product" options are these:

1. Synchr030/S (CAVEAT: price, and requires PDS card slot — eliminates all RAM SIMMS entirely).
2. SIPP RAM (CAVEAT: cheap and good, but not a solution compatible with your existing RAM SIMM inventory, if that matters)

Looks like we’re all out of luck. Both are out of stock (and Tindie isn’t shipping from France currently anyway). I would have had a couple of Macbatts if that weren’t the case!

I’ll just have to be super careful with my fragile plastic pins until Maceffects hears us…

If it's just the plastic clips on the sides that broke, you may be able to use one of these 3d prints to hold the RAM in place:

Sadly, I have no 3D printer, and when I last tried to print those RAM CLIPS at JLC, they refused saying their tiny size was too small for them to print! But the concept is great.

Ultimately, what I did was pay Kay Koba in the past (prior to my buying a Hakko FR-301 Desoldering Gun) to swap out all my RAM sockets and even the ROM socket too. I then had another board with broken plastic tabs on the RAM sockets, and I paid Will (CayMac) to do an SE/30 reloaded build on that board, and at the time he sold RAM sockets.

I will tag @YMK and @Willj so they can comment about availability of their respective Synchr030/S and SIPP RAM products.

I'm planning a Rev B run this winter. Sign up for the wait list on Tindie and you'll be alerted when they're back in stock.

It's likely supply and demand. I've long suspected those sockets are NOS parts, and now that there's increased demand and supply is shrinking, they're going to price them accordingly. Long-term, we'd need someone to bankroll having a manufacturer start making the sockets again -- but given the start-up costs (and likely high MOQ) I'm not sure the pricing for that would be any better.
If anyone is curious, the ram sockets are now 38.40 per.

Someone better get rich fast so they can bankroll new slots. Luckily the plastic ones seem to still be cheap.
