Hacking the Kodak Reels 8mm Film Digitizer (New Thread)

For my modification I ended up using the spacer (7mm riser) provided by @Deano. In his detailed post, he included this picture of the spacer/riser integrated with the sensor board on top, and the extension tube and lens below: Definitely give Deano's entire post a good read through!

Hacking the Kodak Reels 8mm Film Digitizer (New Thread)

After a fair amount of trial & error, I seem to have mitigated my waviness issue with a firmware branch that limits the shutter speed/duration (to go no faster than 3ms). I've done a write-up on this effort here if you want some further detail. I suspect my root issue is more of a hardware...

Branch of 7.7.1 to Limit Shutter Duration

Branch of 7.7.1 to Limit Shutter Duration Created: 5/18/26 The "Waviness" Issue and Investigation One strange issue I encountered recently while scanning with 0dan0's firmware (7.7.1 on a Type C scanner) is intermittent waviness of the captured images, easily seen on vertical lines. The...

Hacking the Kodak Reels 8mm Film Digitizer (New Thread)

As a follow-up on my "waviness" issue, and with assistance from Claude... Based on the best guess that this issue is caused by a very high shutter speed (interacting with the LED backlight's frequency), I will attempt an adjustment to the firmware that sets a minimum shutter speed (to not go...

Hacking the Kodak Reels 8mm Film Digitizer (New Thread)

If you haven’t modified it yet, you may consider returning/replacing it (if applicable). Probably defective. You wouldn’t need any firmware to deal with that situation.

Hacking the Kodak Reels 8mm Film Digitizer (New Thread)

@0dan0, reporting a new issue. I'd describe what I'm seeing as a intermittent "wobble" or waviness where vertical lines from subsequent frames are not consistently straight/vertical. I'm currently running firmware 7.7.1 on a modified C scanner (8mm film with a 12mm lens). Investigation so...

Hacking the Kodak Reels 8mm Film Digitizer (New Thread)

Playback function from the scanner has been broken in the recent firmware mod efforts. It is documented in the user guide: As to the frame rate setting (while using 0dan0's firmware for A,B, and C units) have you tried this during capture? However, if you are attempting to use VideoDoctor's...

Hacking the Kodak Reels 8mm Film Digitizer (New Thread)

Thanks edale, I have revised the firmware user guide to suggest using the scanner to format the card properly. I too have seen some strange behavior that seemed to resolve after formatting with the scanner.

What format (NTFS, ExFat, Fat32, etc) were they formatted under "Partition Magic"?

I remember seeing that before. It could be that you simply need to power it off after the successful firmware update, and power it back on to use it normally. Or if it's not that, please report on what size and format you're using for your SD card for capturing?

Hacking the Kodak Reels 8mm Film Digitizer (New Thread)

Deano has in this post what is probably the most comprehensive report on the process. From the firmware guide, here's a running list of links to such posts: User ChrisTheChiller has documented his unique modification of lowering the original lens which is easier and cheaper than the other lens...

Hacking the Kodak Reels 8mm Film Digitizer (New Thread)

The manual for your model matches what the manual for my older scanner (B version) states. I believe in the earlier (locked) thread, 0dan0 and others validate that the stated resolution is both misleading and also factually innacurate. Maybe an earlier scanner version had a sensor with those...

As a public service announcement for those who are relatively new here and trying out 0dan0's custom firmware (hardware units A, B, and C), please review the User Guide posted here as it is a helpful resource...

Hacking the Kodak Reels 8mm Film Digitizer (New Thread)

Appreciate the report and activity here to keep the thread alive. Just as a note, changing the playback frame rate shouldn’t add to the file size or change the length. For those using 0dan0’s custom firmware you should be able to do this even while capturing (the playback frame rate is added to...

Hacking the Kodak Reels 8mm Film Digitizer (New Thread)

In the time between now and then, would you be open to a crowd-funded effort to provide you a new D unit? I think the community here would be able to make that happen in support your work?
