I don't think the aperature cap really impacted the contrast much - that might be a bit more from use of the backlight shield. I have experimented with some of the small aperture lens caps. Doing the lens modification made it harder to focus, especially on film that wasn't as flat as is ideal...

@melw can confirm, but it appears his firmware allows for some kind of manual white balance. Judging from this picture, there are off-standard WB (RGB) values of 689, 256, 218.

If you haven’t modified it yet, you may consider returning/replacing it (if applicable). Probably defective. You wouldn’t need any firmware to deal with that situation.

Thanks edale, I have revised the firmware user guide to suggest using the scanner to format the card properly. I too have seen some strange behavior that seemed to resolve after formatting with the scanner.

What format (NTFS, ExFat, Fat32, etc) were they formatted under "Partition Magic"?

I remember seeing that before. It could be that you simply need to power it off after the successful firmware update, and power it back on to use it normally. Or if it's not that, please report on what size and format you're using for your SD card for capturing?
