A battery bombed SE stored in a garage for years

Awesome work, it's great that you took a machine with sentimental value and decided to do the hard work instead of just trashing it!

    HyperDrive 20 troubleshooting

I ran across this video yesterday, a guy has a SCSI MiniScribe 8425 that also had a resistor and capacitor next to each other burn. I'm not sure if there is any relation between the SCSI and IDE boards, but I thought it was interesting.

SE/30 was working one moment, then it wasn't

Great, thanks for all the help @retr01 and @AmigaOfRochester ! 😀

SE/30 was working one moment, then it wasn't

Thanks for the info. I'll replace that leaking cap at C7. Do you think it's worth repairing the corroded traces, or leave it alone along as it's working? I'll check the AB for cracked joints, maybe reflow them out of caution.

SE/30 was working one moment, then it wasn't

Yes, it works fine, except for the temporary issue I had yesterday where I had the no-chime and simasimac screen. Do you have any thoughts on whether it's worth repairing, or just run it while I search for another board?

SE/30 was working one moment, then it wasn't

Yes, always using 99% IPA. Thanks for the help and the referral! I've looked at the Rominator from BMOW, and just recently learned about GW's ROM SIMM. Never heard of GGLABS. That's something I wouldn't mind doing down the road once I have the rest of the system dialed in.

SE/30 was working one moment, then it wasn't

I took some photos with my microscope, it's not great quality but it does better than a phone camera. 001 - 004 are the area around C7. 001 & 002 are zoomed out, and 003 & 004 are the same area but zoomed in. 005 & 006 are taken at an angle to try to see the trace under the edge of C7. 007...

SE/30 was working one moment, then it wasn't

@retr01 thank you for the very thorough reply! Yes the LB has been previously recapped, though I don't know how long ago, it was done before I purchased the board. When I get home I will take a close look at the back of the LB for cracked solder joints. I'll also see if I can get a better photo...

SE/30 was working one moment, then it wasn't

Things seem to be working fine now. Here's what I did: Yesterday after sitting for a couple hours I plugged the machine in and tried again: no chime, displayed simasimac screen, same behavior as previously. At this point it had no PDS card, and the floppy and MacSD were connected. This...

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll try to work on it tomorrow and report back!

SE/30 was working one moment, then it wasn't

I was using my SE/30 earlier to run some benchmarks with and without a Daystar '030 40mhz accelerator. The machine has a MacSD and recently recapped logic board. The battery has been removed. It was working fine for a couple hours. I was running Speedometer 4.02 to compare some benchmarks...

    HyperDrive 20 troubleshooting

Thanks for the detailed reply! I took the PCB off and was able to turn the spindle, it rotates freely. When I first turned it I don't recall feeling any "extra" resistance, the heads definitely weren't firmly stuck. I rotated the spindle by hand for a couple minutes hoping that would get it...

    HyperDrive 20 troubleshooting

I just ran across a thread on a different forum where someone successfully used a MFM emulator to get their HyperDrive working. At about $200 it's not cheap, but it is probably worth it to preserve a piece of Mac history. Used MiniScribe 8425 drives aren't cheap, and there's no guarantee one...

    HyperDrive 20 troubleshooting

I did a bit more work on it this morning. I took the PCB off and was able to turn the spindle by hand, it did seem a little tight at first. I turned it by hand for a few minutes and put it back, no luck, the drive didn't spin up. I did it a couple more times, same result. There is a connector...

    HyperDrive 20 troubleshooting

I pulled out the drive to take a look at it, it's a MiniScribe 8425. I have a lot of respect for the engineers that managed to shoehorn this whole setup into the Mac case, there is a lot going on in there.

    HyperDrive 20 troubleshooting

Well, I unexpectedly picked up a 512k with an internal HyperDrive 20 yesterday. Per the serial number decoder, the machine started life as a 128k in March '84. It currently has 512k ram and an 800k floppy drive, so I assume it has been upgraded to a 512ke, though I haven't taken the logic...

HyperDrive 20 Craigslist find (and an SE)

Yesterday morning I did my daily "Macintosh" search on OfferUp (ok, not actually Craigslist), and a new ad for an old Mac popped up. It was poorly written, didn't say anything about the computer other than it was from 1984, and the price wasn't fantastic. It was clearly a 128k or 512k, I...

800k floppy works, but not very well

I followed the instructions in the zero track alignment file, and unfortunately I seem to have made things worse. Following the instructions I was able to determine the zero-track sensor adjustment allows for 5 distinct "steps" (starting positions) for the read/write head. Based on the info in...

800k floppy works, but not very well

Thanks Kai, that looks interesting, I'll give it a shot.

800k floppy works, but not very well

I recently took an old Plus out of storage, it hadn't been used in probably 25 years. I took the 800k drive out today and cleaned and lubricated it, I also very gently cleaned the heads with 99% alcohol and a q-tip. I didn't loosen the screws for the motor, so I shouldn't have un-aligned...
