For the love of old tech + rant on all things modern

Apple does a lot wrong these days (and knows better). But I'm still typing this on an M1 MBA because Microsoft keeps saying to hold its beer.

MacLynx beta 5: now with UTF-8 and even more native controls

Hey, thanks! It's fun to work on. Once everything got ironed out in the build system, then the rest was "easy."

    Beige PowerMac G3 Capacitor Replacement

What were the problems? Did that fix them?

MacLynx beta 5: now with UTF-8 and even more native controls

MacLynx is an update to the original 1997 MacLynx that provides a native Lynx text browser port on A/UX 3.x, System 7.x and higher, with Mac quality-of-life improvements and support for TLS 1.3 through Crypto Ancienne (either self-hosted or on another system). Changes in this release: -...

    ADB KVM Switch - Thoughts?

I've got a push-button one like that. It multiplexes between my Lisp Machine IIci (MacIvory), my clock-chipped Q800 and my "G4" 7300. However, the 7300 uses a different rotary KVM for video since it has a Rage Orion.

    7100 name badge removal

I don't know about the 7100 specifically but some of these you can pop out the applique from the rear (the 1400 is like that).

Macintosh IIci resurrected (first time I've used one too!)

The IIci is my favourite 68K Mac. Stackable, easy to work on, not excessively expensive as classic Macs go, 32-bit clean, not large, many expansion options.

I Bought a Better System Board for my Octane and Need Troubleshooting Help

I have to say that I've always found the Octanes to be a bit of a bag of hurt (along with their contemporary the O2). There are things to dislike about the Fuel but it's relatively straightforward to work on.

G4 PPC Towers with Modern Monitors Adapter

    Ah, that probably explains it.

G4 PPC Towers with Modern Monitors Adapter

Which video card is this? I don't have any trouble with my MDD's Radeon 9000 Pro getting 1920x1080 over DVI.

GOTCHAS when buying a Macintosh Portable?

I killed one of mine (I had two originally) that way, though, so I'll argue the opposite side. My prototype Portable uses an original supply and a rebuilt battery and after its recap continues to perform perfectly except for its audio being a little quiet.

For the love of old tech + rant on all things modern

I, also, like being able to fully control every aspect of the system. If I want to get into some nook or cranny, I should be able to do it without the hardware or the operating system getting in my way. Plus, there's something about the immediacy of older system that modern ones can't...

Macintosh Portable PSI RAM plus ??? Card

Those all look like RAM to me.

Finally entered the world of PAL C64 (via a Kawari VIC-II replacement board)

I'm promised a PAL flat 128 at some point, but I'm happy being 100% NTSC. My main system is a 128DCR with a 1541 Ultimate II. I use a ZoomFloppy with a 1571 for disk management.

    The SCSItron with BlinkyLights

It would be great for getting a rough idea of controller issues. I'd buy one.

Hacking the Interactive Television Box: it's got System 7.1 in ROM

If you have the red ROM for the AITB (Set Top Box/STB), the one that displays on the composite outputs, you can actually hack the unusual form of System 7.1 it includes in ROM. It works great with a BMOW 2MB ROM-inator and a SIMM programmer...

A potato livecam using the C128 VDC and a ComputerEyes

My wife and I had fun doing the video. It may turn up as a gag exhibit at one of the computer festivals I attend in the future. Bonus points: identify what C64 game that particular (1.3x here) arrangement of Yakety Sax came from.

A potato livecam using the C128 VDC and a ComputerEyes

The Commodore 64 ComputerEyes video digitizer can't display live(ish, it's slow scan) video during capture because the VIC-II DMA interferes. So .... let's put the 128's VDC high-resolution chip into low resolution and use that. And then make the capture rate 25% faster...
