Recommend me some older Mac-centric books

You may have already read this, but The Secret History Of Mac Gaming: Expanded Edition is fun, although it took me fovever to get through as I was downloading from Macintosh Garden and playing along the way! Update: I realize this is not "older" of course.

For the love of old tech + rant on all things modern

Agree. My 2017 VW Mk7 GTI has a great UI and does wired Apple Car Play well, Most important car functions are physical buttons, and the touch screen is responsive. Unfortunately VW's newest models have taken a turn for the worse by dropping physical buttons, which was the selling point of VWs...

Cloak and Dagger (1984) a must for 8 bit Atari fans

Unfortunately, I've never owned any Atari HW (yet), apart from playing on my friend's old beater 2600 as a kid in the 80's and in the 90s owning the awesome but ahead-of-its-time networkable Lynx handheld. I'm under the weather with a flu, so I've been watching a lot of retro films to chill...

Behold the Power - Apple Power Beyond Speed Trade Show Video - 1995

Hold onto your hairpieces Video is here >> Backstory: Back in the mid 90's my first job out of college involved what was then hyped as the "Multimedia" development revolution. I had the pleasure of meeting various people pivotal in using the Mac and the burgeoning QuickTime technology for...

Thanks to @jcm-1 for his assembled BlueSCSI complete with LED. Massive performance increase on my SE/30. The Speedometer 3 scores for the Internal and External BlueSCSI on are the left side of the screenshots compared with the SCSI2SD.

68k Fun with Filemaker Pro 3 retro development

Here's an example: On my Mac SE with a 16Mhz 68000 SpeedCard it takes 8 seconds to search for a term across the entire Bible. So about 16 - 20 seconds on a non-accelerated SE or Plus

68k Fun with Filemaker Pro 3 retro development

Hi - Here was my process, which was actually fairly easy My source for the KJV data was a comma delimited file from this excellent project: https://github.com/stephenharris/insert-bible-verse/tree/master/assets/scripture I used NotePad++ on Windows to convert the CSV to tab delimited format...

68k Fun with Filemaker Pro 3 retro development

Thanks. yeah, I was impressed how well it works under the resource constraints of the SE and System 6. The database contains 783,137 words so it is pretty amazing that a full text wild card search completes in a reasonable amount of time.

@JDW . . . Just curious, what did you end up doing with your site? Did you stay with FM, or move to a different solution? Darrell Johnson

68k Fun with Filemaker Pro 3 retro development

FileMaker Pro 3 really served my needs when I could not find any vintage Bible software for my Mac SE running System 6 that would allow full-text search (without taking forever) and function on the 9 inch 1 bit display. Using my SE/30 running System 7.1.1 as my Filemaker Pro 3 development...

WarpSE: 25 MHz 68HC000-based accelerator for Mac SE

My two cents. Reducing complexity sounds better than endlessly engineering for edge cases.

WarpSE: 25 MHz 68HC000-based accelerator for Mac SE

@JDW and @retr01 - Great points about the reason an SE has value. I completely agree. I would add to that the SE is far less complicated and therefore more robust and resistant to the effects of aging. I love my SE/30, but it's more complex with a denser board and many surface mount caps...

WarpSE: 25 MHz 68HC000-based accelerator for Mac SE

@Zane Kaminski I agree JDW. As a fellow SpeedCard user I can't wait to see the 68000 come pretty close to SE/30 speeds, which was the Nirvana back in the day for the SE.

WarpSE: 25 MHz 68HC000-based accelerator for Mac SE

Great discussion on the sound issue. Despite the distorted sound I still really enjoy my SuperMac SpeedCard on my SE and would love to see the WarpSE come out, even if the sound issue is still in progress. I'd hate to see solving the sound issue become a block to getting the board out. No...
