    Quadra 630 Boards and Misc

They're great little computers :) I really like them. They were super cheap when all other 040s had gone expensive, but will punch blow for blow with a Quadra 800 in most benchmarks, and have some cool upgrades available. Overclocked to 40MHz they out benchmark an 840av. These ones are easy to...

Using Lego to Try to Take Over the World!

Yeah, I think the official names were "Lego Dacta Interface" for the one that works with the Apple II, Commodore Pet / 64 and BBC Micro, and then the one I'm using was called the "Lego Dacta Interface B". Sadly I don't have one of the originals, but they're basically a bidirectional parallel...

Using Lego to Try to Take Over the World!

Last couple of days I've been messing with a 9751 Lego serial interface from about 1994 on my LC 475. Lots of fun. I don't have many official sensors to go with it, but I've made a couple of my own. Yesterday I got it working after working out that the TX and RX were backwards as if it was a...

BLAZING. FAST. MAC. The Performer PDS 68030 Accelerator by MacEffects!

For interest, a newer version of Gemstart, optimised for System 7.1, has surfaced. I've added it as download 16 here (Gemstart Universal 7.1) : https://macintoshgarden.org/apps/accelerator-card-drivers Originally uploaded by @David Cook to 68kmla, but 68kmla doesn't allow non-logged in /...

    Should I install 64MB or 65MB in my SE/30?

Using 16MB SIMMs in Bank A and nothing in Bank B is commonly reported to cause no-boot issues with the stock ROM. There is no reason not to put small SIMMs in Bank B, normally, and it improves compatibility. But you want to clean the contacts on those SIMMs. Given you're having more luck without...

    Should I install 64MB or 65MB in my SE/30?

BTW, if you use a hairdrier to warm them up, they are a little less brittle, but you still need to be super careful. You shouldn't need to ever touch it again after cleaning them and swapping them over. If you have some contact cleaner, spray it in the slots while you're at it. Deoxit is...

    Should I install 64MB or 65MB in my SE/30?

The rule is generally "put the big SIMMs in Bank A" on the SE/30, rather than it specifically talking about 16MB SIMMs. 16MB SIMMs weren't readily available when the SE/30 was released and due to a court case from the Mac II/IIx era, Apple only listed configurations they'd tested. Yeah, those...

    Should I install 64MB or 65MB in my SE/30?

Do I remember you saying you put the 64MB in Bank B? I'd start by putting the 16MB SIMMs in Bank A, which is what the Apple instructions say. This will especially help when you're using the stock ROM. While you have them out, clean the contacts on both sets of SIMMs using IPA (rubbing...

    Should I install 64MB or 65MB in my SE/30?

The issue everyone is talking about results in the computer not booting, if it is booting, I wouldn't be too worried, but, I'd use Mac Test Pro... http://download.macintoshgarden.org/apps/MacTest_Pro_October_1995.iso OK, but that contradicts what others have said. There are likely more...

    Should I install 64MB or 65MB in my SE/30?

Put 65MB in it, the SE/30 can be a little weird and doesn't always boot if you put 16MB SIMMs in one bank, and nothing in the other. It should work, but... it doesn't. I believe you should put the 64MB in bank A, and the 1MB SIMMs in Bank B, so I guess option 3? Apparently there are fewer...

    Troublesome Trio of 6100's

Hum. I'd start by verifying voltages (under load), even with a easy recap, sometimes it results in voltage changes. Did you use low ESR caps for the output side of the PSUs to ensure stable voltages? Might be worth uploading some (high resolution, well lit) photos in case anyone happens to spot...

BLAZING. FAST. MAC. The Performer PDS 68030 Accelerator by MacEffects!

Yeah, that looks pretty CPU bound doesn't it. There there really is never a pure benchmark for a single parameter, especially on older machines. Norton's System Info manual with old versions gives a breakdown of what characteristics dominate each of their individual tests in a fairly open way...

BLAZING. FAST. MAC. The Performer PDS 68030 Accelerator by MacEffects!

Oh, completely, yes. If you think about it - for starters, the RAM is on a 16bit bus in the SE, while it is 32bit in the SE/30, but then, even with the accelerator, the RAM is only 8MHz instead of 16MHz, so right up, before you consider memory wait states, the RAM is 4x slower in terms of MB/s...

BLAZING. FAST. MAC. The Performer PDS 68030 Accelerator by MacEffects!

2.1 will work. But if you really want 2.2 I have it on floppy disk somewhere, and I think I've uploaded it somewhere... I'll have a quick look (then I should get some sleep - I've spent the last couple of days migrating my website to a new host and am sick of DNS, WordPress and email server stuff).

BLAZING. FAST. MAC. The Performer PDS 68030 Accelerator by MacEffects!

Ah no, that isn't the problem :) I checked the gerber files from github and there is another trace on the other side of the board. That was the information I was trying to get. So, back to it being a puzzle why it doesn't get faster with faster clocks. Sorry folks :)

BLAZING. FAST. MAC. The Performer PDS 68030 Accelerator by MacEffects!

We all make mistakes, even on github :ROFLMAO: - look at the trace you're breaking - it leaves the output pin of the clock and heads towards the FPU. Combine that with the fact that the weird behavior you're seeing would be exactly explained by this - the speed doesn't change when you add a...

BLAZING. FAST. MAC. The Performer PDS 68030 Accelerator by MacEffects!

I think they both work in System 6 :) You get to watch the silly startup animation. But the main issue here is that you never actually clock the FPU faster. Stick a frequency meter on the FPU clock pin if you can - you'll find it is always just under 16MHz. Not sure why your graphics were...
