Also the RAM has been swapped already with no change to the symptom.

Apple IIe Card for Mac crashing during loop

@retr01 the loop lasts 5-7 seconds before a crash. A longer string results in a faster crash. It displays an error dialog “The application ‘unknown’ has unexpectedly quit, because an error of type 1 occurred.” The Mac will keep working but if I relaunch the Apple IIe app the Mac will hard...

Apple IIe Card for Mac crashing during loop

I have a couple of Apple IIe cards for Mac. One works fine. The other will crash after a few seconds running a simple basic loop like: 10 PRINT "Hello, Tinker Different" 20 GO TO 10 RUN It's been recapped, reflowed and ultrasonically cleaned. Have you experienced this issue before? Any advice...

    PowerBook 2400 Power/IO board capacitors

    The PowerBook 2400 uses tantalum caps on it's motherboard but has some atypical (for Apple) through-hole electrolytic caps on its power/IO board. Location Capacitance Voltage Rating Diameter Height Temp Rating C39 100uF 10V 10mm 6mm 105º C48 100uF 10V 10mm 6mm 105º C47 150uF 6.3V 10mm...

    Color Classic motherboard woes

That looks like your G2 and sub-contrast are too high. See the Service Source guide for adjusting them. Agree with a previous poster you're not actually getting a gray screen. ROMs could be bad, not installed correctly, or you have some broken traces. Have you checked the ROMs are in the right...

    Metcal SP-440 Self-Contained Desolder System

Six more months and many joints later and I still haven't had to replace the liner or deal with clogs. This thing is a beast compared to the Hakko.

    Color Classic motherboard woes

I'd suspect the EGRET too. Have you tried leaving the machine powered up for a while? I've found that some will eventually boot if 'warmed up' for 10 minutes or so.

    AppleVision 850AV Repair

I spent some more time on this with a friend and have some updates from troubleshooting done since the last post. Replacing the sync processor and all 100uF caps on the neck board made no change. We went through the data sheet for the sync processor and noticed that it can used B+ as reference...

Raiders of the Lost Icon: search for long-forgotten iconic treasure!

This is a super cool project. It'd be great if you leveraged AI/ML to sort chunks of bits by entropy for likelihood of being an actual icon.

Color Classic logic board powers on from keyboard then nothing...

How well did you clean up the EGRET? In my experience cap goo around that IC will prevent boot. In some cases scrubbing with a brush and IPA will work, but in others I've had to remove the chip, clean underneath and then solder it back on. Good luck!

Help with gone wrong recapping attempt.

The page is expired, but here's a screen shot from my purchase history. It's not an every day kind of deal, but I've had great luck just by keeping saved searches across eBay, Craigslist and FB marketplace Agree this is all overkill for most hobbyists. I waited until I was frequently doing...

Help with gone wrong recapping attempt.

Preheaters are another thing I've found great used deals on. I got a Metcal PCT-1000 which links up with my HCT-1000 hot air station from eBay for $200. it retails for $2,000! It's been nice to have, and it's cool that it links with the hot air station to not overheat the board. They have both...

Help with gone wrong recapping attempt.

@3lectr1c Agree they can be expensive and it's not worth getting the cheap ($30ish) ones since they're such poor quality. I recommend finding a set that's high quality, but used, and ideally already compatible with your existing soldering station. I haven't used the Hakko tweezers, but I bet...

Help with gone wrong recapping attempt.

@Genjoke if your budget allows, a good pair of hot tweezers is IMO the best way to remove caps. No hot air to melt nearby nylon, easy to get into the toughest corners and no twisting. Here's a vid of me removing all the caps from a Classic II MLB in just a few minutes with them the first day I...

    Agilent/Keysight InfiniVision MSO-X 3000 series oscilloscope repair

I recently recovered a dead MSO-X 3014A with a 1GHz upgrade from e-waste. On power up just the Ref, Math, Digital and Serial lights would turn on, but nothing else would happen. I posted over at the EEVBlog forums and those folks suspected the problem was due to corrupt NAND and could be...

    Snooper serial loopback plug

I'm in the process of troubleshooting a LaserWriter 12/640. The service manual refers to a EPOST (Extended Power-On Self Test) mode. This mode is initiated with a "printer rollback test plug" (P/N 922-1489). I went ahead and tried the loopback plug I built for Snooper and can confirm it works...

About that white goop in power supplies

Acid is corrosive. it could cause damage to the board over a (probably long) period of time.

About that white goop in power supplies

It’s made by Chipquick and says noncorrosive and non conductive. It should be fine, but that’s a tiny tube that won’t go very far.
