PB 1400 with very bad hinges

Yes, here: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4391026 Installing the BlueSCSI will cause the cage mounts to break for sure, some of them at least. They’re likely already broken though, they do so in their own. As long as some are still intact, you can leave it be. But you can also fix them, and...

PB 1400 with very bad hinges

The 170 needs the hinge mounts replaced for sure, they all do. That’s a proven fix though.

PB 1400 with very bad hinges

With 90s laptops, there isn't a brand out there who didn't build a bad hinge/hinge mounting design. TiBook in particular is because they just glued the hinge to the housing display-side. So yeah, that breaks! I think they also do snap in other places though too.

    Help needed with Powerbook 100

Can you post hi-res photos of your board? Sounds to me like you may indeed have something broken somewhere. Using a system with old caps installed (if any) can accelerate corrosion. It's certainly possible for an ultrasonic cleaner to break already weakened connections.

PB 1400 with very bad hinges

Congratulations: You officially win the award for the worst cracked 1400 display housing! That is truly remarkable. You have a few options here. The 1400's hinge failures are twofold: 1. As ClassicHasClass described, the hinge mounts can break. This sort of failure can and does happen to...

BlueSCSI V2 locks up when attempting to “spin up” the drive

Would I have to take it apart to get to the log? Will try to do that tomorrow.

BlueSCSI V2 locks up when attempting to “spin up” the drive

Title. It’s in a PowerBook 170, System 7.1 and I can’t see any way to make it not spin down the drive in that version. Is there any fix for this? I can’t play Tetris properly, or leave it for more than a couple minutes or it locks up. Otherwise, I’m happy with the device. Have seen this brought...

For the love of old tech + rant on all things modern

+1 on cars without buttons. The UIs are usually laggy and just not great to use in general, especially while driving I'd imagine. Glad our car doesn't have any of that.

Powerbook 160 Screen contrast wont hold

It shouldn't be that difficult to test the slider I'd imagine. If you attach a probe to each connector point and measure what I'd assume would be resistance off it. If sliding it results in a steady change, you should be good there. I do have a 145, so I can verify that we get the same readings...

Powerbook 160 Screen contrast wont hold

No idea then. Try spraying deoxit into the contrast slider? Check for loose solder joints on the inverter?

Powerbook 160 Screen contrast wont hold

What caps did you use on the screen? Ceramics have the potential to lead to this behavior on certain panels.

For the love of old tech + rant on all things modern

How about the fact that the settings app and control panel are STILL two different apps, 11 years on from what the settings app first was released. And the old control panel is still needed to complete certain tasks, like to manage network devices and partition a disk.

For the love of old tech + rant on all things modern

This is just one reason, I have many for why I like this stuff, but: Not really extremely vintage or anything, but stuff just looked nicer back then, in general. Nowadays we have thin and boring laptops, smartphones, and flat bland UI. I want to know whatever happened to UI like Windows Aero...

What forum should I post in about old WordPerfect?

I don’t get the toxicity here? I’m sorry if I insulted you - that wasn’t my intention. I don’t doubt your experience, I was just offering my opinion based on my own experience to try to help out. Yours is welcome too.

What forum should I post in about old WordPerfect?

It will vary a lot depending on the era and the make you’re looking at. For 90s computers, desktops are typically far more reliable. But for that early 2000s capacitor plague period, getting a laptop avoids that ever being an issue. I definitely wouldn’t call their reliability the same, when...

What forum should I post in about old WordPerfect?

Well I still think the best solution would be to fit a new hard drive or solid state replacement in his current computer, since that’s all that’s wrong with his old one. Would simplify a lot of things. And I never suggested XP for the laptop as well - it would need to be running 98 to run...

What forum should I post in about old WordPerfect?

This is true for many laptops from the 1990s, but I’d just like to mention that the ones I specified previously (from the early 2000s) are not anywhere close to horrid and they’re known to be very reliable. At the very least far more so than desktop computers from the time. Just wanted to...

What forum should I post in about old WordPerfect?

Any windows version newer than 98 or Me will not be able to natively run WordPerfect, which includes 10. Doesn’t matter really if it’s 32 or 64 bit. If all laptops are out, that really just leaves finding a vintage computer that can run the software you would like to use, and those fail...

What forum should I post in about old WordPerfect?

Ah, no worries. I'm here to help! Main issue I see right now is that the Optiplex models that you've specified are going to be too new to run DOS-based Windows (like Windows 98) properly. In a best case scenario, you'll be able to install it but you won't have the proper drivers (basically...

Believe that his last computer is late-90s, so it should be High Density.
