New Toy: Dell Latitude D630 (Windows 7 Pro)

I don't remember what the machine uses and am too lazy to look it up, but... If it uses a 2.5" SATA drive you should certainly be able to replace it with a SATA SSD. If it uses a PATA drive, you can get a PATA => MSATA adapter for about $15 and install a somewhat more expensive MSATA SSD...

New Toy: Dell Latitude D630 (Windows 7 Pro)

Thank you. Yes, on my E6410 they were also socketed. But on the D430 which is a family relation to the D630, the CPU is soldered. Probably because the D430 was very compact for its day. I feel like the D series was a high point for the Latitudes. Not the pinnacle, because Latitude has...

New Toy: Dell Latitude D630 (Windows 7 Pro)

We're the CPUs socketed on those laptops?

New Toy: Dell Latitude D630 (Windows 7 Pro)

Bottom port is for D series docking stations. The docking stations were great if you needed to move your laptop often between stations with local monitors and keyboards. It can also provide serial and parallel ports, which can be handy if you want to drive an old chip programmer, for...

    Radeon 7000 Flashing Woes

Yes, changing those 8 pin serial Flash chips isn't too difficult and it greatly simplifies the conversion process. I'm happy to read that it worked for you.

Anyone else a huge fan of the Alien franchise?

I quite liked the moment at 30:30. Also appreciated his commentary on the dropship. It had been a couple of years since I got my Aerospace Eng. degree when Aliens came out and the dropship thrusting in the direction of orbital motion and dropping to the planet has always bugged the heck out...

    Radeon 7000 Flashing Woes

This is usually a pretty trouble free process. I've done dozens of these, although most were 20 years ago... The only thing I can think of is maybe the brand of chip on the cards isn't supported? That seems a little farfetched, but what kind of Flash chip is on the cards, make and model...

Anyone else a huge fan of the Alien franchise?

In addition to the glaring plot hole premise for the film, part of my dislike was a personal preference kind of thing. Other than "The Shawshank Redemption" and "The Green Mile" I abhor prison films. And I pretty much had to be dragged to those two, but enjoyed them after I was there...

Anyone else a huge fan of the Alien franchise?

I can go along with your head canon. Resurrection might as well have been a completely unrelated film.

Anyone else a huge fan of the Alien franchise?

I also liked the first two movies. I was working at NASA JSC when "Aliens" came out -- NASA JSC is in Clear Lake, 10000 married couples, 5000 single male engineers, and 6 single women. I saw Aliens by myself many times in the theater. Actually, the first two movies did a pretty good job of...

Initialization hangs on Power Macintosh 8100/80

Remember, the specs on the caps are likely +/- 20%

Identifying and confirming fake 68040 CPUs (especially the L88M mask)

Well, I did mention in my post that Rochester might be the one who would have custody of any masks. Nice to have that detail nailed down for certain.

Trying to ressurect a Power Macintosh 9600/350

Correct on the first sentence. For second and third, you just ran past the limits of my knowledge. I know that OF output defaults to the serial port. Beyond that, you'll need to get one of the more software'y guys to answer. Or just post a new thread with a subject similar to Terminal...

Trying to ressurect a Power Macintosh 9600/350

On the original PCI PowerMacs the OF dialog is sent to one (both?) of the serial ports. So another Mac with terminal program should enable interaction with OF even if the Macintosh in question cannot produce video output.

Initialization hangs on Power Macintosh 8100/80

Okay, I got nothing. I don't know about any board revisions beyond the speed changes. The HDI-45 connector should be present on all X100 boards. If you find an 8100 board that lacks an HDI-45 connector, then it is almost certainly a Radius 81/110 board. Radius used the exact same board...

Trying to ressurect a Power Macintosh 9600/350

On a PowerTower Pro I've seen similar symptoms when a PCI arbiter chip wasn't soldered properly -- or rather the solder had failed for some reason. Resoldering fixed it. The Bandit Arbiter is a little 28 pin PLCC labeled 343S0182. I have not seen this particular issue on the 9500/9600. It...

Initialization hangs on Power Macintosh 8100/80

Is the 'new' board also an 8100/80? There were also 8100/100 and 8100/110s, IIRC. And somewhere in there they changed the NuBus controller, I think. There was some detail about the original NuBus controller having na issue with I can't remember what and the new one being desirable for no...

How to print to any printer from Classic Mac OS using macOS / X.

I may be overlooking something, but it seems to me that your Wi-Fi enabled 68K Macs can access your wired network through their Wi-Fi connection. So if you add an ethernet to LocalTalk bridge, such as the AsanteTalk, to your network, and install the LocalTalk option in the Imagewriter, that...

Mystic Died. Looking for an MC88916DW80 chip.

Hmmmm. I don't know what's going on internally in the 88916 and the 68040, but looking at the circuit in resistor network terms, changing the value of Rp shouldn't change voltage at the 68040 pin, under some conditions. The voltage at the Pclock pin should always be Rp X I where I is the...

    Macintosh IIci Logicboard recreation

I am interested, but you're going to be shipping from UK (I'm in Texas) which would add substantially to the expense, I think. I'd probably be smarter to wait and see if someone does a US based run...
