    2024 PowerPC Challenge

Day 21: C64 emulation on PPC My mom picked me up an old C64, 1541 floppy, and monitor a few years ago from a garage sale, but I have never powered it on (fear of the over-volt failing voltage regulator). It has been sitting on the shelf and I think about it every now and then. Growing up, my...

Day 20: Reminisce the old days A few years back someone was cleaning out their storage and happened upon an Apple IIe and IIc, and gave them to me. I had to buy the power supply for the IIc from eBay, and disassembled them both before powering them on. I had some old floppy disks from the...

Day 19 PPC progress I decided to try another 1.8Ghz processor off eBay for $16, so waiting for that to arrive. Stopped by FreeGeek, their dual 1.8Ghz G5 dropped price to $20, so if it is still there next week, I will probably bring it home. No other great purchases, but did get these from...

Day 18 Today I will try to do some 3D modeling refinement on my next 3D printed miniature: G3 "Blue and White" and I will be using my G4 Mac Mini. Loaded up Lightwave 9.3 and opened my model. The filament is closer to Bondi Blue than the "blue and white" And here is a look from the...

Day 17 post 2: Hot, Pink on Pink Action!!! I decided to pull out the Strawberry iMac tray load and benchmark it against my 3D printed mini iMac. I am still working on the mini mouse and mini keyboard (original puck mouse for scale). The mini is powered by a 4x4 inch Intel NUC running...

Day 17 G5 maybe later... Swapped CPU locations, ensured they were seated all the way... still iffy on the booting, power up and it chimes, but no video... let it speed up the fans for 10 minutes and restart and I get some life... Finally got ASD to boot OF... But it lies and tells me its...

    2024 PowerPC Challenge

Day 16 G5 Dual 2.5 rebuild I tried to do some more benchmarks, but it keeps going into thermal sleep, after 10-15 seconds. I aborted the Cinebench test, and downloaded ASD 2.5.8 and burned the CD. I could not get it to boot into Open FIrmware, but the OS version booted. Of course the CPU...

Picked up a PowerMac G4 MDD with the Zip750 drive!

All of mine showed up as normal drives on the IDE chain. G3 Strawberry, G4 cube, 2 different model G4 lamps, and G4 Sawtooth. Do you have other devices on the IDE cable (master slave issue)? If you purchased the 2.5 mSATA to IDE drives, here are the jumper settings:

Day 15 G5 Dual revisit So i have the dead water cooled 2.5GHz G5 dual, and an air cooled 1.8GHz G5 dual. I got a replacement power supply from eBay for the liquid cooled Dual G5 2.5GHz, but it still showed no signs of life, then discovered the coolant leak. Hence the FreeGeek salvage 1.8...

HOT G5 TIP! When removing the heat spreader from the G5 daughter-cards, it is held on by two screws and a somewhat sticky and thin thermal pad. Rather than use a tool to pry against the PCB with potential damage (or trying to use the leverage of the heat pipe - Oh NO!), instead use two of the...

    2024 PowerPC Challenge

Day 14 part 2 Update on the G5 dual 1.8GHz... tore it down so I can have a look at the motherboard for weak solder points. Definitely needs some dusting. Maybe this is why it does not boot? Mismatched CPUs (first clue is the different colored plastic)? Looks like one is original 2003...

Use the highest concentrate of isopropyl alcohol that you can get, like 91%. You can use a toothbrush lightly as well. Then give it plenty of time to dry thoroughly.

Installing Mac OS X Leopard on the Apple TV (1st generation)

Just an FYI, the miniPCIE port does work for other things, like a dual SATA adapter. Running DarkWeb on 10.5.8 XBMC playing movies off the SATA hard drive (with external power source).

Day 14 Quicksilver adventures. 867MHz, 1GB ram. I think the QS has a bad CD-drive... eventually after powered on for a while, the cd ejected and I was presented with a severely scratched free copy retail Leopard. Installed a red board IDE->SATA on the motherboard for the boot SSD, and...

G4 Mirror Door Update-Added SSD, Unable To Install OS9 On SSD

I ran into similar issues this morning, trying to boot os9 off a cloned SSD from Sawtooth into a QuickSilver. For some reason it would not boot os9. I pulled out an original 9.2.2 boot cd and started the QS up, and it only sees the IDE drives, not the drives on the SATA adapater. I am...

Day 13 Every time I go to Free Geek it is like visiting a no-kill shelter. I find something I have to rescue from the landfill by taking it home. Rescue 1: G4 Quicksilver, noisy fan (scraping on the bent cover, or just need replacement.) Chimes, so further work needed. $10 Rescue 2: G5...

Day 12 The wicked witch is dead. Yes, both CPUs leaked. Apparently the coolant Apple chose is both corrosive and conductive. Who made that choice? I don't want to throw any more money at it, I saw a dual G5 2.0GHz at FreeGeek last week, maybe they still have it and I can add that one to my...

Poll - Extending the term length of the board

Does the forum not have a function that a moderator can email all members to notify them of the poll? I know I get email notifications on threads I watch.

    2024 PowerPC Challenge

Day 11 I've lost that lovin' feeling... The G5 PSU arrived today. I delayed dusting things off, so in a rush to clean stuff, I broke off a fan blade... I will see how well Bondic holds it together. I was looking at a video on how to install the bluetooth and wifi, because I saw two antenna...
