    A takky Mac…..

Like your ITX build solution! Very cool. Was doing something similar, but cut the chassis "roof" out and was mounting the ITX board to a DOA Plus board and its nekkidized Mini ATX PSU to the denuded center section of DOA A/B. Case is a damaged, vent melted Plus now has a removable driver side...

    A takky Mac…..

I've been dumping my (thank heavens above) backup of 72 pages of attachments lost a/o their links redirected randomly at the MLA and just ran across this one that I'd mentioned upthread: It's more complicated, including A/B switching Video output (inputs and output?) from or to the Mac for...

Rebuilding the ComputerLab from spare leftovers and scrap . . .

Now that's an interesting comment for feedback. ;) It's not really all that much space when you consider it's a tad less than 9'. across the window wall and only 5.5'. along the desk wall as is in a 10' x 12' space which was my bedroom pre-Covid when I had a roommate in the master suite . ...

Rebuilding the ComputerLab from spare leftovers and scrap . . .

Progress pics, no time for commentary. Woodbutchering and design questions welcome. Just keep in mind, this is an in progress, use up as many scraps and leftover components as you go, temporary knockdown full wall/setup exercise. :p Everything needs to be trimmed leveled up and finished...

    A takky Mac…..

I don't think I was clear on that. The 630 board remains stock and easily interchangeable. I suggested designing a ports panel for the rear of the case with new connectors soldered to it where they belong, wires plugged into the Mobo would be clipped to length, stripped ans soldered into holes...

    A takky Mac…..

AHA! you posted this whilst I was typing. No need to run a SCSI cable on the drawer front connector to the back of the case. If you don't go with the Compact Flash in SCSI port option there are plenty of inexpensive SCSI header to DB-25 breakout options like the one above. SCSI is on the ribbon...

    A takky Mac…..

Fabulous! love it as it stands, but can think of a few tweaks offhand based on other hacks I've seen over the years. Good point, it looks like there's plenty of room to move the logic board higher up in the frame, where an opening underneath would allow standard cables and A/V Card's cables to...

Rebuilding the ComputerLab from spare leftovers and scrap . . .

Well, that certainly wasn't the ugliest part, but details on that upcoming and in progress details of these pics later. Never got the desk reassembled, but it was a very good day in that room and out on the terrace with the power tools. So a wrapup of today's progress before I do a TLDR detailed...

Breaking the 36MB RAM limit on the LCIII

Connectors are always expensive. I say go SMT with SIMMS by beveling the edge at 45 degrees. It should be easy enough for me to come up with a jig for using the Dremel everyone but me seems to have. One part holds the Dremel at that angle and the second would be a slide setup that mates with the...

Breaking the 36MB RAM limit on the LCIII

I've looked at the only two(?) types of DIMM modules that support DRAM, they utilize FPM DRAM. Chunking their 64bit data path down to two 32bit memory banks would be like installing a pair of 72pin SIMMs. 72/144 and 100/200 packages exist, dunno how many are out there by now and the latter may...

Rebuilding the ComputerLab from spare leftovers and scrap . . .

Enough for one day. This is what happens when you knock something together with a screw here, a screw there and three or four under the hidden corner. Pull it apart, you've got one mess and a boo boo on your thumb when the desktop decided to head toward the floor. Time to square things up and...

Breaking the 36MB RAM limit on the LCIII

I like it, but still wondering how the memory map works out. Did you catch my PM? The Sonora Memory Controller in the LCIII looks to be Apple's first run at the DRAM control line core of the next gen MEMCjr Controller for Q605/LC475 and related to C610 and C650. So you may be headed toward a...

Rebuilding the ComputerLab from spare leftovers and scrap . . .

Found a mid-teardown pic of the corner with bookcase support for full length shelf on desk end of room. Desk's re-positioned under the curvacious upper layer. Rack's still in place, desk belongs along wall in between. Here's where I reached my decision point, Radius StudioArray test fail...

Rebuilding the ComputerLab from spare leftovers and scrap . . .

Thanks! I'll try to find some before pics today, maybe you'll find those useful as well. I figured documenting my wood butchering might be helpful. I also do fine woodworking, I'll post examples of furniture building, two of them were underneath the raised section, one will be heading back.

Breaking the 36MB RAM limit on the LCIII

You nailed it, trace paths would be impossible to overcome. In an analog system with few traces it would be one thing I guess. The good thing about a surface mount bodge is that the conversion frees up the entire trace side for its contorted flip-flopping. < tangent > It hasn't, but it sits...

Rebuilding the ComputerLab from spare leftovers and scrap . . .

Forgot to mention that the point of the exercise is to make the room useful for the 7-24 months I'll be here without spending much real money. I have a lot of lumber, plywood, cutoffs and scrap squirreled away in the walk in closet and other hidey holes. Wanna use as much of it up as I can so it...

Rebuilding the ComputerLab from spare leftovers and scrap . . .

I've mentioned the flood that ruined all the carpet in my ground floor apartment here and there. In the show your desk thread I documented some of the in process changes to what remained of the setup. Here's the low rent rebuild, sans the nice seven foot bookcases that supported what I'm...

Breaking the 36MB RAM limit on the LCIII

Just noticed I ran the SIMMs right through the adapter in that sketch. OOPSIE! edit: just checked, I didn't do that, did you edit it like that? < tangent > Cool looking setup for the -SE40- are you planning an LCD? All I saw was that one pic. If you wanna wade through some awful .TXT...

Breaking the 36MB RAM limit on the LCIII

No worries about breaking the solder joints, the printed supports would be installed before soldering with good contact. Mounting screws are smaller diameter than the holes in the SIMM's for finagle factor. Holes in SIMMs can be drilled out to larger diameter if necessary or advisable overall...

Breaking the 36MB RAM limit on the LCIII

Thanks, it's been a long time coming! No need for slotting in config above, or maybe I don't understand your question? I've been looking for my SIMMspender project box to no avail, but I just developed a suspicion about where it might be now that I stopped thinking about it. I have one very...
